What is a Lamp Shade?
A lamp shade is a decorative shade which typically surrounds a light source. Table lamps and floor lamps often use a lamp shade. The shade itself serves multiple functions, directing light upwards for ambient light, and downwards for nearby tasks. The funnel shape also helps heat to escape from the light bulbs. Some light may diffuse through the sides of the shade as well. The shade also protects your eyes from light-bulb glare and can become a part of your room's decorative style. Replacement lamp shades are a great way to refresh a lamp or light fixture. They attach to the lamp usually with a harp or fitter and finial.

An Empire-Shaped Shade
An empire lamp-shade is a traditional lampshade shape where the bottom is wider than the top. It also features straight sides, forming a kind of triangular shape. The bottom of the shade spreads out more to distribute light, and to shine outward and downward for nearby tasks. The smaller opening at the top helps to funnel bulb heat away from the lamp. 10"W x 9"H Black Parchment Empire Lampshade
These shades have given new life to a pair of hand-me-down brass lamps. The gold interior reflects beautifully onto the body of the lamps. My only reservation is that the lamps get quite hot, so I try not to leave them on too long and will look for cooler bulbs. Other than that, I'm very pleased. I also want to give a shoutout to the LampsUSA website. I would have been lost without its information about different shade configurations and sizing and its wide selection of inventory. For one of the lamps, I needed a harp and finial, which I purchased here. Everything worked out perfectly.

It was a little pricy, but I wanted this shade and nothing else. And I own it now! I can't believe the poor selection available in specialty and department stores when it comes to lampshades. The lampshade was delivered in good condition. I ordered two for the antique lamps in my living room. The color is a shade or two darker compared to the picture online, which I actually like. It looks so much better in person. The shades look great on my brass lamps. I am very pleased.
They say that every room needs to have some black and I completely agree. My newly painted lamp with these shades is it! The silver is rather shiny during daylight, but Ive had the lights both high and low during evenings and the silver is not noticeable. Overall, I like these and I have no regrets buying them.

This shade includes a Spider Fitter
The top of this shade is fitted with a `Spider` fitter, designed to fit on top of a harp. The spider is aptly named with multiple arms which extend out from a central ring to the edges of the top of the shade. The ring sits around the screw thread at the top of the harp, fastened by a screwed-on finial.The shade does not come with a harp - typically the harp, a two-pronged loop of metal which comes up around the light bulb and joins at the top, is a part of your lamp base. If you need a new harp to go with your shade, see our selection of shade harps.
If your old harp is damaged or missing, or is not the correct height, you may need a new harp so that your new shade will be positioned correctly. Shades with a spider fitter typically have a `drop` of 1/2" to 1" where the spider arms recess downward into the shade to hide the top of the harp. Unless you a replacing an existing shade with a shade the same size you may need a different-sized harp.
You may want to measure from the top edge of the shade down to the center of the fitter. This makes the fitting less visible when viewing the lamp from the side but does raise the position of the shade by the drop distance. Also keep in mind you may prefer not to see any of the socket or bulb when viewing from the side.

Measuring an Empire-Shaped Lamp Shade
Empire shades are typically measured with three dimensions:- Top: The diameter of the circle at the top of the shade - measure straight across.
- Bottom: The diameter of the circle at the bottom of the shade - measure straight across.
- Slant Height: The diagonal height/length measured in a straight line from the top edge of the shade to the bottom edge. Empire shades feature straight sides, sloped at an angle, so measure flat against the side.
