Spotlight on Tiffany Lighting

Louis Comfort Tiffany was born in 1848 and is the son of Charles Lewis Tiffany who was an American businessman and jeweler who founded New York City's Tiffany & Co. in 1837. Creativity and a sense for business seemed to run in the family. Using his inherited talents, Louis Tiffany became a trained painter, interior designer, and stain glass specialist.

Eventually, Tiffany created the Tiffany Glass Company in 1885, which later became the Tiffany Studios. From Tiffany’s New York-based company, his signature lamps were created by him and his team from 1878 to 1933. Though, for over a century, it was widely believed that Tiffany designed these pieces, it has recently been proven that artist Clara Driscoll was actually the creative mind behind the beautiful designs.

The first Tiffany lamps were made around 1895, originally handmade by craftsmen which took several hours. These handmade Tiffany table lamps and Tiffany floor lamps were a way to return to handcraftsmanship after the Industrial Revolution boom. By the 20th century, the Art Nouveau movement was at its peak, making Tiffany lamps ever so popular throughout the remainder of this artistic period.

An icon of the Art Nouveau movement, a typical Tiffany lamp is composed of a bronze stand topped with a stained-glass shade. Whether leaded or made with copper foil, each lampshade showcases both meticulous attention to detail and an inherent interest in nature. Intricate patterns and motifs inspired by flora and fauna are particularly prevalent, with daisies and dragonflies serving as popular muses.

Much like the designs that adorn them, the lamps' silhouettes also often pay homage to the natural world. Many popular Tiffany fixtures are shaped like trees, with the base, stand, and shade acting as roots, a trunk, and foliage, respectively. Similarly, many of these stained-glass lampshades feature geometric designs, scalloped and irregularly shaped edges that suggest flower petals, butterfly wings, and other forms found in nature.
