As the demand for them increased the original white flare globes soon took on more geometric forms and fancier metal fitting. Most of these early fixtures used a kind of glass called milk glass. Milk glass was first called opal glass and was originally made in Venice in the early 16th century. Back then it came in blue, pink, yellow, brown, black, and of course white. The effect of milk glass happens when they are producing the glass by adding either tin dioxide or bone ash to give it the opal finish we all know.
