Did You Know?
The lighting industry is in the midst of an exciting and dramatic revolution. This revolution will see the phasing out of energy hogging incandescent light bulbs & the rise of the CFL, compact fluorescent bulbs. New possibilities in light technology-Full Spectrum lighting mimics the beneficial aspects of sunlight for better quality, cleaner and potentially more healthy light. Light Therapy involves the use of light to treat Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and other human conditions related to lack of sunlight. Light therapy can also be useful in balancing ones body clock (circadian rhythm). Energy Star rated light fixtures are optimized to use dramatically less energy.

Light Therapy Artificial sunlight is found useful in treating and preventing Seasonal Affective Disorder (also known as winter depression, which brings about depressive symptoms specifically in winter), and delayed sleep phase syndrome, in which the circadian (day V/s night)-rhythm is disturbed, and the individual tends to fall asleep at the same time much after midnight. Artificial sunlight may also be useful in prevention, or minimizing the severity of jet lag. Although, UV light is used in treatment of psoriasis and eczema (as PUVA therapy), and in treatment of acne, (in which case it is also accompanied by application of red light), it is not the entire spectrum of visible light that is employed. Harness the healing power of sunlight in the comfort of your home or office. Pioneering technology from Verilux offers several condition-specific therapy lamps.
The Power of Sunlight
The body produces Vitamin D from sunlight (specifically from the UVB band of ultraviolet light), and lack of sunlight can lead to a deficiency. Metropolitan areas have higher levels of air pollution, which block healthy sunlight. It is recommended that we each soak in one hour of unfiltered sunlight each day in order to enjoy its many benefits, which include:
- Improved Immunity and Prevention of Disease
- Lower Blood Pressure (The further the distance from the equator, the higher the blood pressure levels)
- Increased Metabolism & Energy Levels
- Mood Enhancement
- Improved Sleep
- Lower Eye Strain & Fatigue
- Improved Learning Ability
- Plants also benefit from full spectrum lighting
Sunlight and Our Moods
Nothing regulates the body clock better than sunlight. Full Spectrum lighting replicates beneficial qualities of sunlight. Serotonin, the hormone associated with mood elevation, rises with exposure to bright light, and falls with decreased sun exposure. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a serious form of the "winter blues", is caused by a lack of sunlight. SAD occurrences are more common in locations further from the tropics, and most drug-free treatments involve replicating sunlight by way of special full-spectrum bulbs, which are tuned to the proper wavelengths of light.
