Rustic or Lodge Style Tips in Buyer's Guides

Posted on May 27, 2014 by LampsUSA Experts | 0 comments

A cornerstone of the modern rustic design style is simplicity. This means clean lines, a neutral palette and natural materials selectively utilized.

What is the Appeal of Rustic Style?

If you have a traditional home that is cozy and rooted in the countryside - a proper, log fire-type place, then rustic lighting is for you. Rustic lighting brings the feeling of the wild outdoors inside. Rustic lighting makes you think of great medieval castles, with stag's heads on the walls, bold heavy oak furniture, and uneven flagstones covering the floors. Rustic lighting reminds you of tight winding staircases, and of arrow-slit windows.

The appeal of rustic lighting is that it will add warmth to any home. The word “rustic” is defined as a simple style, characteristic of country life, and with rustic lighting it is that very country charm which you will be adding to your surroundings. Rustic style complements many outdoor activities of nature walks, swimming, fishing and hunting. Colors are close-to-nature like brown, amber, earth tone yellow, and green. Materials include real cast-off deer and moose antlers (or reproductions), actual wood bark, branches, twigs, rawhide, mica and brown-finished metal.

The Characteristics of Rustic Style

The traditional rustic look brings to mind comfy log cabins, hunting lodges, and sitting by the warm glow of a fire in cold weather.

Rustic lighting can be hand-forged wrought iron fixtures or made with natural elements and textures like stone and natural materials. Often showing the way pieces and materials were combined together and celebrating their function as much as their natural beauty speaks to the eclectic aesthetic of rustic.

Rustic style lighting is perfect for lodges, western homes, log cabins, and anywhere the interior design of a room has a rough natural theme. The perfect lighting elements not only help bring a room together, they serve to illuminate the rest of the décor.

Giving Your Home a Rustic Look

Rustic style lighting comes in many forms. Antler chandeliers are one of the first fixtures that come to mind when the term rustic lighting is mentioned, with its dynamic twists and turns not only utilize natural resources, but bring to mind a lush forest. This is a popular choice for rustic decors bit it is certainly not the only option. A rustic lamp or floor lamp with the familiar motif of a bear, moose, deer or pine trees, pinecones, acorns and various other tree designs is perfect to accompany a cozy chair for nights sitting by the fire, reading a favorite book. A more contemporary and wild look can be achieved with branches and twig style chandeliers, hanging lights designed with bundles of branches and lit with electric candles, evocative of everything from a sylvan forest palace to a meadow grotto. These lights can accent a variety of rustic styles, with their warm glow, incorporation of natural materials, and classic motifs.

Rustic lighting comes in the forms of both indoor rustic lighting and outdoor rustic lighting. Outdoor rustic lighting can be placed on the wall of your house, or, equally effectively, on poles or fence posts. Use rustic outdoor post lighting to welcome visitors as they arrive in your drive, and to give your property a homely, rustic glow. Rustic post lights are placed on posts and can even be attached to trees.

Rustic lighting is not only restricted to homes but it could be used in lodges and business areas to enhance the ambience of the rooms or conference halls. The warmth of rustic lighting can complete the interior and exterior of any environment. City and country folks alike agree that Rustic Lighting can deliver the rustic beauty you seek into your surroundings.

Consider the Use

Reading lamps need a wider shade to provide plenty of light.

Consider the Room - What is the color and style of your room? Will the lamp have a starring role or compliment its surroundings?

Consider the Bulb
Be sure you have 2-3 inch separation from bulb to shade, especially for higher wattage bulbs. Be sure the top opening is wide enough to vent the heat. Compact Fluorescent bulbs are great for most lamps because they burn cooler, but you may need larger harp since CFL's are taller than standard light bulbs.
