Foyer Chandelier Buyer's Guide

Posted on April 14, 2015 by Daniel B | 0 comments

Buying a foyer chandelier for your hallway is more often than not neglected by most homeowners. Many tend to overlook that fact that a foyer chandelier should be carefully chosen if it is to create a visually stunning impact. So, here are a few simple tips you can follow on how to buy a foyer chandelier.

Know the area of the foyer

Measure your foyer or hallway so that you will know the dimensions of your space. Once you have the dimensions, you can proceed to the finding the right chandelier for your foyer. It would be good to remember when shopping for chandeliers that if you have a low ceiling, don’t pick a low chandelier that could bump into your guests.

Determine the right size of the chandelier

Armed with the dimensions of your foyer, you can calculate the appropriate chandelier size for it. So, add the width of the foyer to its length in feet. Its sum will give you the rough diameter of the right-sized chandelier, of course, in inches. For example, if your foyer's dimensions are 10 feet by 12 feet, add 10 and 12. The sum, 22, is the diameter of the chandelier that you should get in inches.

Get the height of your ceiling

Measure the distance between the floor and the ceiling. This is important in determining how high your chandelier must be. This is because ideally, a foyer chandelier must hang about 7 feet off the floor for ceilings measuring 10 feet. Additionally, with a ceiling height of less than 10 feet, you need a chandelier which measures less than 27 inches tall. For higher ceilings of 11 to 16 feet, the chandelier can range between 27 inches to more than 40 inches tall. If a ceiling is two stories tall, the foyer chandelier should be composed of two or three tiers in order to provide the best visual results.

Consider the style and main color scheme of your foyer

Yes, the look and style of your foyer counts as well. If your foyer is decorated in an elaborate style, then you can select a piece that commands attention. For this, you might pick a crystal chandelier with sparkling lights. On the other hand, a small foyer won’t benefit from an opulent chandelier. So, better stick to a smaller and less intricate foyer chandelier with a metallic finish or lampshades.

Assess the amount of illumination

To provide enough illumination for your entryway, you have to make sure that your chandelier should provide between 200 to 400 watts of power. That should be enough to keep the hallway well lit both for safety and beauty.

However, if there is a particular foyer chandelier that you love but it doesn’t provide bright light, you can forego this tip and purchase it. You can actually put in more lighting fixtures to provide additional light which your foyer chandelier cannot give.

Buyer's Guides - Restoration Style Tips
Restoration Style was derived from Charles II after he was restored to the throne of England in 1660. During this period a big richness was noted in English design, architecture and art. Upon his return from the Netherlands and France he and his followers brought with them the latest European styles.

Take a trip back to 1920's Venice with delicate milk glass sconces in your powder room, or the regal elegance of an embellished Victorian crystal chandelier in your staircase or foyer. Bring a taste of medieval Europe to your dining room with a dramatic round iron chandelier. Most Vintage style collections span throughout time including ceiling lights, pendants, sconces, chandeliers and bathroom fixtures, as well as floor lamps and table lamps.

Consider the Use

Reading lamps need a wider shade to provide plenty of light.

Consider the Room - What is the color and style of your room? Will the lamp have a starring role or compliment its surroundings?

Consider the Bulb
Be sure you have 2-3 inch separation from bulb to shade, especially for higher wattage bulbs. Be sure the top opening is wide enough to vent the heat. Compact Fluorescent bulbs are great for most lamps because they burn cooler, but you may need larger harp since CFL's are taller than standard light bulbs.

Buyer's Guides - Book Reading Lights
Book lights are important if you want to keep your vision healthy over the years. Position your lamps and other lighting sources in such a way that it reflects directly onto the page without creating shadows. Many lighting fixtures like desk lamps and bedside table lamps are good examples of book lights, while other direct sources of lighting (like pendant lighting) can also work.
