The three new lighting collections feature chandeliers, pendants, wall mounts and vanity lights that flaunt her relaxed style mixed with elegant accents. Each collection is distinct, while remaining rooted in Day’s fresh and innovative trademark approach to design that is on display on “Bargain Mansions.”
The Lee Boulevard Collection gained its namesake from a house in Day’s hometown of Kansas City, Missouri. Traditional silhouettes with contemporary details reflect the Lee Boulevard home's little slice of countryside amidst a sprawling cityscape.
The Juniper Collection is a tribute to the first home to air on the show. She and her father worked on this home together, and at the end of the build, her father purchased the home. This home’s French chateau design and masculine feel inspired the Juniper collection of linear pendants, wall mounts, vanity lights, and chandeliers.
The Charlotte Collection is influenced by the trio of mansions located on Charlotte Street.” The Charlotte series comes to life in chandeliers, wall mounts, and vanity lights inspired by three of her favorite homes on Charlotte Street in Kansas City. Tamara’s signature approach to design manifests in timeless silhouettes of a classically shaped frame modernized with subtle curves echoed by spherical details.
When asked about the partnership, Tamara Day stated, “I love the quality of the product and the unique and bold designs. I chose to partner with Quorum because they are a family-owned company who values their staff and brand partners.
You’ll be inspired by this talented designer's creations.

]]>Here are some suggestions for school supplies and lighting that will help your student:
The best type of barn light really depends on the individual, their personal taste, and their home lighting needs. Before we can address the specific uses for each type of barn light however, it will be helpful to define just what exactly a barn light is. Barn lights are, as the name implies, traditionally used to light barns, and their origins are almost purely utilitarian. While there is technically no “official” designation of what a barn light is, they all share the same basic characteristics. Originally they were created to provide light in often dark barns, and not much thought was put into their aesthetic other than that they needed to be durable, and they needed to shield the bulb from the elements often found in leaky barns or outside. Outdoor barn lighting fixtures were, by necessity, metal, industrial and simple.
The barn lights of today are much the same, except they can be used for a wide range of lighting purposes, both indoor and outdoor. Barn lighting isn't just for barns anymore. Barn lights are understated, subtle, and give any space an authentic vibe. If you're really going for authenticity, you can source vintage barn lights and refurbish them for use in your home - though this can be a costly effort, as they're increasingly in demand. For rooms you want a vintage, homey vibe in, barn lights are a great choice. When it comes to picking the barn light for you, however, you’ll have two main styles to choose from, gooseneck barn lights or pendant barn lights. Understanding the differences between them, and the situations they are each best suited for is important in deciding which lighting style is best for your space.
Gooseneck barn lights get their name for the way they resemble a goose’s long, curved neck. Gooseneck lights are attached to the wall and have a long, curved stem that supports them. These fall under the category of wall sconces or fixtures, because they are attached to the wall, and are not movable once they are installed. They are typically all metal, usually of a brushed, matte, understated color. They also have a characteristic barn light shade, which directs all of the light downwards. Gooseneck shades are great for outdoor use, especially in areas with strict “dark sky” laws on outdoor lighting. Cutting down on light pollution is never a bad thing, you don’t want to block your neighbor’s view of the stars!
Because gooseneck barn lights are wall-mounted, you can put them up almost anywhere. From industrial chic lofts, to farm houses, workshops and outdoors applications, the gooseneck light can fit in just about anywhere. Just ask Joanna Gaines, that rustic farmhouse look works every time. The gooseneck barn light is a versatile lighting solution, just be aware that they are called gooseneck for a reason- they can stick out from your wall quite a way, so make sure you have ample space, or your visitors could be seeing stars after bumping into it! If you're using a gooseneck lamp outdoors on a patio or exterior wall, space likely won't be an issue, but for indoor use, avoid narrow spaces like hallways or small utility rooms.
Pendant barn lights, on the other hand, get their names from their flexible, cord or chain-based fixtures. Pendant barn lights are attached to ceilings, and hang down via a flexible stem, allowing them to sometimes swing like a pendant if there’s a strong wind, or maybe your barn isn’t quite sturdy enough. Not all pendant barn lighting is actually able to swing, but that’s where they get their name. We don’t make the rules, we just supply you with the tools. They also feature the all-metal, industrial aesthetic of their gooseneck cousins. Pendant lights almost always feature the characteristic barn light shade that directs light downwards, like gooseneck barn lighting, this makes them great for areas where you don’t want to pollute the night sky with artificial light.
Because pendant lights can only be attached to a ceiling, they must be used in interior spaces- or on porches with a ceiling overhead. That’s not to say they have limited function, however, you can use pendant barn lights in kitchens, lofts, actual barns and more! The understated aesthetic of pendant lights allows them to be used in a variety of room styles, from industrial, modern and minimalist, to charming vintage farmhouse. The vintage pendant barn light is a great way to make an antique home look new, and vice versa!
One note about sourcing and using vintage barn lighting fixtures - while they offer an authentic look, you may struggle to find exactly what you're looking for. If you need several lighting fixtures, finding a matching set may take a great deal of time and frustration, not to mention the high price tag many vendors are fetching for these retro items. Too, if you prefer energy efficiency, a more modern LED gooseneck barn light better fits the bill - and at a great price.
The style of barn light you need is largely depending on your space. If you’re lighting a large room, especially one with higher ceilings and lots of natural light, pendant lights are probably your best bet. If you’re lighting the exterior of your home, or a smaller space, like over a kitchen sink, or entryway, gooseneck barn lights are optimal. Some spaces, like workshops or man caves, can even accommodate both types in the same room, with wall-mounted gooseneck lights providing task lighting over a workbench, and supplementing the overall room lighting of ceiling-fixed pendant lights.
Let’s get down to brass tacks here though, you read this article looking for a winner in the barn light showdown. All things considered, the ability of a series of sharp pendant lights to transform a room from blase to chic cannot be undervalued. Gooseneck lighting is great for adding that antique charm, but if you want a truly timeless look, pendant lights are almost always guaranteed to be a hit. It really does depend on the space, the look you want, and the light you need though, so buy your barn lights accordingly. Regardless of what you’re using them for, barn lights are great for giving a space a rustic, authentic vibe, but modern barn lights come in so many styles you can find a light for practically any space, regardless of your style.

]]>The same can be said of contemporary or transitional black pendant chandeliers, ceiling lights, and wall sconces.
These bold and sleek black lighting designs have become a popular trend in interior decorating. They can highlight a room and make it more interesting. Black lighting fixtures can accommodate any style, with black chandelier and black pendant lights a favorite in interior design portfolios for three very good reasons:
Black Lighting Fixtures create an atmosphere that has a stunning impact against white or neutral surroundings, as well as in open spaces where a majestic chandelier or large black pendant light captivates an entry way, living room, or bedroom.
Whether it is bold and substantial, or an artfully linear and tranquil design, black lighting fixtures create an intoxicating silhouette that will enchant the senses.
Monochromatic and black-and-white color schemes are a classic, highly appealing composition that transcends time, especially in the kitchen, living room, or bedroom. By mixing tones and textures, in addition to converging a varying style of lighting fixture with the dominant style of your room, you can create a distinctive, visual appeal with designer-level results.
A black lighting fixture will not only complement a contemporary or transitional space, it can elongate the look of floor-to-ceiling space which makes it a good choice for small spaces like apartments or rooms with low ceilings.
By choosing an open-frame, linear design, you can create the illusion of more space in a smaller room. Notwithstanding, a larger, more substantial black lighting fixture is ideal when you have room to spare and want to make a statement.
NOTE: Before selecting a black lighting fixture, consider the size of the room and if the fixture will illuminate an open area or be situated above a table or seating area. Scale the size of the fixture to the size of the space so that it is proportionate to the room, and does not interfere with furniture or traffic.
WHEN SHOPPING: Our Main Category Page(s) let you begin your search by the Type or Style of lighting fixture you desire. Likewise, the Type and Style page(s) on lampsusa.com allow you to narrow your search by what is most meaningful to you, such as: Globe or Wood construction, Room, Color/Finish, Number of Bulbs, Current Promotions, and even a Top Ten List.
Minimal and modern, or casual with open and airy design features, black lighting fixtures will definitely make a space more interesting, with different styles available to complete the look you’re after.
If you desire a more subdued feel in your room, a matte finish is the best option, as it will not compete with other room elements.
Black lighting designs will be the most prominent accessory in your room, so they will deliver a 'win' or a 'fail'. That is why splurging on high-quality, contractor-grade lighting designs from reputable manufacturers is essential to getting the full effect of the space you've envisioned.
Our Lighting Styles have distilled the principal design features into nine categories, so it’s easy to find the lighting fixture that will complement your the essence of your home.
If you're not sure if a particular black lighting fixture will work in your space—whether by design or by size—our design team is a phone call (or email) away, and can give you help you decide based on your specific requirements.
While many of us are fortunate enough to earn a living, or eligible for financial relief from the government during the Covid-19 global outbreak, people who live in isolated regions of the Philippines experience additional hardship, as regional restrictions and lock-downs make it all the more difficult to provide for their families as for those who live in cities and more modernized areas.
Food continues to be scarce and desperately needed. As a result, LampsUSA is preparing to make its second donation in August. This donation will assist local relief efforts in rural Mindanao, Philippines where access to food and conveniences are difficult to reach.
To helps those who endure the additional pressure of living in an isolated community, the LampsUSA Cares Project began in April 2020, and continues to provide assistance to more than 200 families.
Ed Lecciones, a local relief organizer commented, "I am just overwhelmed with gratitude! Indigent families are [those] most affected right now because of community lock downs," [they] have no work, no pay . . . and help from the government hasn't arrived yet. Just the other day, some neighbors of ours asked for help because her infant child had no milk. I gave them a carton of milk, since I have some in stock for my own children. Knowing that more help is coming is a big relief!"
We are truly grateful for the continued support of our customers who make it possible for us to provide such needed support on their behalf. I want everyone we do business with to know how much your purchase improves the lives of people who have been adversely impacted by this pandemic.
Thanks to each and every one of you.

When it comes to articulating your personality or evoking an interior design essence that is either awe-inspiring or delicately exquisite, no other lighting solution can compare to the form and function of glass art lighting fixtures.
Just as fashion trends come full circle throughout the generations, it’s no surprise that a similar trend continues among homeowners who again are discovering the nature-inspired Art Nouveau appeal of Tiffany-style stained glass lamps, or the timeless symmetrical art glass lighting inspired by the Arts and Crafts, and Art Deco movements.
While the chance of discovering a Christie's-worthy, Louis Comfort Tiffany heirloom in your grandmother’s attic is slim to none, there is no shortage of reproduction art glass lamps that incorporate lush colors, turbid seeding, or gradient-colored fused glass into historical and modern designs.
Since 1902, Louis Comfort Tiffany lamps have evoked an ethereal sense of wonder and elegance seemingly unmatched by any other art movement. And while the price of an original Tiffany lamp is well out of reach for most, the ability to find high quality Tiffany- and Mission-style table and floor lamps can be attained through quality lighting manufacturers who have perfected the stained glass techniques, yet remain true to the craft and intricate designs of Tiffany and Clara Driscoll, or the clean geometric shapes immortalized by the Arts and Crafts movement and regarded by Frank Lloyd Wright.
When compared to an original LC Tiffany lamp, reproduction lamps from Dale Tiffany or Meyda Custom Lighting not only retain the mystical beauty and timely appeal of high quality Tiffany lamps, but have perfected the technology and durability used to create exquisite replicas that are well within reach.
Reproduction Art Nouveau or Arts and Crafts lighting fixtures from high quality lighting manufacturers such as Elk Lighting, Feiss, or Lite Source are inspired by original designs that include the transparent, opaque, or pearlescent-coated stained glass designs that made Louis Comfort Tiffany famous. The new creations ignite rich hues and depth of color through use of metal and copper foil construction instead of lead, as well as incorporate the design of the lamp into the cast metal base which minimizes the risk of tipping.
Yet unlike their costly legacy counterparts, reproduction Tiffany lamps—in addition to modern glass shade lighting fixtures that exude a more contemporary flair— add the durability of modern firing techniques and environmentally friendly scratch- and UV-resistant finishes to extend their durability as well as their beauty.
Art glass speaks to our soul, and gives us the ability to extend part of ourselves into our home and personal spaces. The selection of stained glass lamps and glass pendant lighting designs of today are certain to whet the appetite of any taste, whether one wishes to remain true to an art movement, or inject a modern allure into a timeless classic.
Even still, as the trend of artfully blending different architectural styles is on the rise, Tiffany-style and Mission-inspired lamps, glass pendant lights, and outdoor lighting fixtures have continued to gain popularity among homeowners who have renovated their home within the past three years.
Lighting fixtures with glass art shades provide many options, and no matter your personal preference, the illuminated glass art captures attention and evokes an elegance that fabric shades cannot provide.
When selecting glass shaded lighting fixtures or pendant lights, consider the lighting effect of the glass shade. If you wish to maximize light and create dancing colors, transparent fused or kiln-formed glass pendant lights are the popular choice to let light shine through.
Bear in mind that Tiffany- and Mission-style, or Mica lamp shades are much heavier and thicker than standard fabric shades, and closed at the top which will direct the light downward. In addition to downward cast light, the artful design of the lamp shade will also soften the light and diffuse the light emitted from the shade, making Tiffany-style lamps perfect for intimate social gatherings. These functional factors are of great benefit to those seeking a lamp for reading or socializing, and without having to increase the amount of ambient light. This makes reproduction Tiffany lamps ideal for use in the den, office, entry way, living room, or bedroom.
In addition to perfected techniques in craftsmanship and durability, many Tiffany-inspired lamps and glass shade lighting fixtures now incorporate LED lighting into their designs that, unlike fluorescent or incandescent bulbs that create too much heat or created issues with color, make it possible to enjoy the beauty of the art glass without natural outdoor light.
Meyda Custom Lighting of Yorkville, New York is a longstanding stained glass lighting manufacturer that has perfected the use of LED lighting into the world’s largest LED stained glass chandelier for the Stanley Theater in Utica, New York. The impressive chandelier is 35-feet wide, 11-feet tall, and weighs in at more than three tons. The grand chandelier was uses the same advanced technology and artisanship for which Meyda is known, and employs in all of its lighting solutions for the home market.
Moreover, the use of Tiffany-inspired lighting fixtures is not confined to the interior of your home. There are numerous styles and options to create the elegant and subdued lighting effect throughout your outdoor landscape or your home’s exterior. Many of these outdoor lighting styles incorporate opalescent or semi-opalescent glass shades and metal work to create the Mission-style geometric designs, but are crafted of marine-grade materials that are weather-resistant (like brass and copper) to endure harsh outdoor climates.
With no shortage of inspiration from either the timeless historic designs or modern versions of Tiffany lamps that use art glass in new ways, there is no limit to the style, brand, or function of a Tiffany-inspired lighting fixture to compliment your home décor.
Whether you work remotely, or simply desire a private sanctuary to escape the drama commonly referred to as 'home', lighting plays an important role in making your home office space functional, comfortable, and personal.
]]>Whether you work remotely, or simply desire a private sanctuary to escape the drama commonly referred to as 'home', lighting plays an important role in making your home office space functional, comfortable, and personal.
So why not enjoy your office space as much as you would any other room in the house?
There are many lighting fixtures available to create the private sanctuary you envision, and each lighting fixture will play a specific role in helping alleviate weariness when spending extended periods of time in a relatively small space, or a space that does not have access to natural light. A well-lit, comfortable home work space will help you stay productive and relaxed.
Beginning at the desk of your home office, task lighting is widely relied on by those who need focused light—especially when attention to detail is of utmost importance. Task lighting reduces eye strain and fatigue, and has come a long way since your grandpa’s workbench.
Today’s desk lamps now combine full-spectrum LED technology with sleek, stylish lines and are available with floor, table, or clamp bases, in addition to adjustable brightness levels that work with you instead of against you.
Think of ambient lighting (or general lighting) as the neutral tone in your paint palette, or the scoop of vanilla ice cream in your hot fudge sundae. Ambient lighting is the foundation to which all other lighting is added, and will create the desired mood, or atmosphere, of your personal office space.
Functionally, ambient light combined with the task lighting on your desk and other accent lighting around the room, will help you avoid eye strain which can lead to drowsiness or headaches. Ambient lighting also allows your eyes to readily adjust to objects around the room, whether near or far away.
Ambient lighting is achieved through use of Chandeliers or ceiling fans with lights and wall lighting. These lighting fixtures are often overlooked when planning a home office environment. Still, ambient light is just as important as the desk, the furniture, or the area rug and other room décor, as the light the chandelier itself will be the design element that ties it all together.
"Chandeliers aren't just for dining rooms anymore," says Deb Milis, professional lighting designer of LampsUSA. "Replacing an outdated ceiling light with a signature-piece chandelier, or with a unique pendant light, is the key establishing the style you want, setting the overall tone of the room. Lighting fixtures within a home office can really improve the way a person feels while performing their day-to-day tasks."
So toss that circa 1984 flush-mount ceiling light and trash the track lighting system; instead, make a statement with a chandelier that reflects your true personality, or consider a chandelier with a contrasting color, asymmetric shape, or material such as iron or wood.
The Ultimate Chandelier Buying Guide will show you everything you need to know about chandeliers, including how to measure your room and make sure the chandelier you choose is the right size.
If a chandelier just isn't in your budget or to your liking, accent lighting such as floor lamps combined with cute table lamps or a plug-in pendant light can further enhance functionality through a 'layering effect' of light, while at the same time, punctuate your personal style.
Accent lighting adds the final layer without adding glare. Accent lighting is also
an integral part of your home office décor and add a greater range of depth when you use floor lamps with neutral or dark shades, or with pendant lights that draw attention to an object or create a focal point.
How to Choose Floor Lamps, Plus Table Lamps, and Lamp Shades provides more information in greater depth.
Lastly, a rheostat or dimmer switch delivers more control of the amount of light your home office requires. Add a set of string lights to keep light to create a relaxing effect and add visual interest to complete your home office environment.
One more consideration—and one that is relatively inexpensive—is to update an existing lamp shade with a new shade topped off with a fun finial or charm. A new lamp shade can also provide a way to widen or narrow the flow of light depending on the shape of the shade.
]]>You’ve watched every episode of HGTV’s Fixer Upper with Joanna Gaines, the co-founder of Magnolia.com, and your Pinterest pages, “Dream Kitchen” and “Romantic Master Suite” are a never-ending scroll of kitchen cabinets, granite surfaces, lighting fixtures, and other unique design elements you never thought existed.
But is it time to move forward with the dream kitchen or master bath you envision?
And how do your dream home aspirations compare to the reality of what’s trending in the real world of home renovation of 2020?
Well, if you’re a “nosy neighbor” who likes to take deep dives into data, you’re in luck.
Houzz.com—a leading platform for home renovation and design, and that offers the latest renovation and decorating resources—recently compiled 87,000 responses to 160 home remodeling questions asked to US homeowners in its annual nationwide survey.
In its 2020 Houzz & Home Study, Houzz delivers a meaningful overview of key renovations and indicators, as seen through the eyes of U.S. homeowners, making it a highly effective home remodel-planning dashboard.
The home renovation data is assembled into a full-color, 46-page study that provides
at-a-glance charts and topical summaries, including: home improvement trends by
metro-area, generational perspectives, and project popularity—in addition to spend benchmarks and financing solutions. It also has an extensive appendix that drills further into generational demographics and changes in year-over-year median spend by metropolitan areas.
“From a home improvement perspective, one of the greatest takeaways I recognized was that the reasons for renovating—‘wanting to do it all along’ and ‘customize a home to make it my own’—hasn’t changed,” says Steve Brielmaier, owner and founder of LampsUSA.com. “It was also interesting to see that minor home redecorating efforts, such as changing the color of a room, updating a room with new lighting fixtures, or adding new coat of paint is the easiest and most budget-conscience way to get the new look you want when a complete overhaul isn’t necessary.”
As kitchen and bathroom renovations continue to hold the title of top two renovations, adding a home office complete with an audio/visual wall monitor, standing desk, and wet bar for barista-inspired coffee, contends with outdoor living spaces where the comfort of the indoors is created outside with cooking, dining, entertainment, and lighting systems.
Deb Milis, a seasoned lighting professional from LampsUSA commented, “Outdoor lighting is often overlooked until the last minute, but it’s the functional yet artful detail that fuses the indoor and outdoor spaces into a just the right about of light and ambiance required for night time activities. Plus, there are so many styles available now that weren’t available even several years ago.”
(For more information on outdoor lighting, see the LampUSA’s Outdoor Lighting Buyer’s Guide.)
Another growing trend in home remodels is renovating an old bedroom or long-forgotten attic space, into a personal home office or work area. And, as many industries and employers recognize the value of providing a quality work-life balance, roughly 10% of Gen Xers and Millenials (and even the Baby Boomers) intend to add or update a home office that includes table lamps and lighting fixtures to create a personal work space that is enjoyable, and truly their own.
Having a project to look forward to is something that can help bring a sense of accomplishment and joy to your life for many years to come. So as you plan to turn your Pinterest page into reality, the outlook for home renovations and the scope of indoor and outdoor projects appears to remain steady for US homeowners.
]]>Here is a list of complementary colored pieces that would accentuate the room based on Sherwin Williams recommended colors for 2018.
]]>This deep sea blue hue is meant to evoke wanderlust and inspire adventure through an opulent and mysterious shade.
Today, people have a growing sense of adventure. We love it so much that we are bringing it inside our own homes.
This color is versatile enough to work with both traditional and modern styles. This warm shade of blue has both dramatic and yet soothing qualities to create a feeling of walking by the ocean.
Now is an excellent opportunity to get ahead of the game by looking for great complementary colors.
Ivory can be defined as a neutral color because it can fit with almost any shade. Ivory is also known as a relaxing color to have in your house. It carries some of the same pureness, softness and cleanliness of white but slightly richer and with a warmer touch.
Adding an ivory colored piece to a sea-blue colored room creates a nautical vibe. Both the look and feeling of having these colors together gives the sense of relaxing by the beach. The Ivory would look best on furniture and cushions that would enable better relaxation.
Of all colors, Brown is the most neutral. Dark brown, a natural color that can be seen on wood, gives the sense of familiarity. Familiarity is an excellent vibe to give off in a room to welcome guests.
Just like the trees in any forest, dark brown pieces are excellent for backgrounds in interior design. Mixing dark brown and Sea-Blue Oceanside, gives a sense of going into a natural and untouched coastal area. Being able to relax and enjoy nature in your own home.
Unlike the previously mentioned colors, dark green is a cooler color. These colors are naturally calming and give the room a much more open appearance. Dark green symbolizes the color of pine tree leaves and are very natural.
Mixing dark green and Sea-Blue Oceanside gives a natural appearance of sea water. This would look especially natural in the interior design by painting a portion of the room with dark green as an accent to the Sea-Blue Oceanside painted walls.
Yellow is the color of energy and optimism. This bright color symbolizes sunshine and daisies, each sending positive feelings to the mind. Yellow is always good to have in a room to brighten up the mood.
Balancing tones is very important to a room. Each of the previous colors were either neutral or cool. Having too much of one tone can bring an imbalance to the room, which can make a room too open or closed.
It is very important to have just enough yellow to give energy to the room. Using a few yellow pieces would be just enough to do this. Having too much could give an exhausting feeling to anyone in the room.
Having yellow is very important to giving energy for people to go on adventures. Yellow and Sea-Blue Oceanside are perfect because they represent a gorgeous day by the ocean. This feeling can also be experienced in the household.
These are all colors that would look so great with the color of 2018. Finding pieces that have these colors can be hard though. Luckily, we have items that match these exact colors and would complement Sea-Blue Oceanside very well. Make sure to check them out here.

LED lights are durable and cost efficient. Here are the 40 best benefits from jumping on board the LED lights train.
]]>If you've asked why should I switch to LED, this is the place for you. The LED revolution is only starting to take hold.
1. Save money
We will cover the light bulb replacement advantages of LED in a section below, but first, let’s look at power usage benefits of LED. LED light bulbs to save an estimated 80% or more on energy costs - a big time argument for the use of LED lights.
In a whole house, that’s a huge saving, and a big reason to switch to LED. It also means it's OK to leave a light on so people know – or think – you are home?
2. No UV emissions
Ultra Violet (UV) rays have plagued the fair complexioned for years, but most people attribute that to the sun. Well, many traditional bulbs put out some UV as well. A health benefit of LED lighting is that there are no UV rays or other harmful emissions known to date.
It's not just people that benefit from LED lights.
3. Environmentally friendly
See above statements about mercury and UV. Also, consider the energy consumption reduction (also mentioned above). Primarily, LED light reduces carbon footprints – fewer emissions from power plants, less toxic waste, and less heat generated.
4. No energy wasted as heat
A boat load of radiant energy comes from traditional and CFL bulbs in the form of heat. On a sweltering summer night, that becomes counterproductive to air quality management.
Switch to cool:
Another significant aspect of LED lighting is that it doesn't get hot since any heat is dissipated through the design of the diode and heat sink, whereas fluorescent, halogen, and CFL bulbs generate a lot of radiant heat.
LEDs can get hot, but that's only a problem when used wrong.
5. Choose from warm, cool, or daylight versions
The adjustability of light is what lead LED to become a go to for the show business clients that have long used them in extravagant color displays. With any technology, once they catch on and their benefits take hold, they become available in a variety for both home and commercial lighting.
6. Focused directional light
The diode is directional. Typically, the direction of focused light happens with a form of reflection forcing the beam into a given space. There’s no ugly silver reflector piece needed for the diode to put light where it’s needed most, rather than wasting energy in lighting unwarranted areas.
Plus, with the advent of the omnidirectional diode, the first limitations of directional LED lighting are fading into history.
7. Quality of light
We’ve all, at one time or another, worked under one of those unpleasant tube light ceiling fixtures. You know, the ones that sometimes strobe, creating an uncomfortable strain on the eyes and lead to headaches. LED lighting, being so consistent in function and use, alleviates the problem of the fluorescent strobe.
LED lights also produce enough quality light to cut back on the total amount of lights used. It takes fewer LEDs to produce the equivalent lumen output of fluorescent bulbs.
8. Clean up looks
No ballast, no large light box, no sizable inconvenience to design – LED light fixtures are naturally clean in design (and lightweight). The endless options are only starting to proliferate the lighting world.
Even the simple, unremarkable flush mount 'boob light' has seen a revitalization.
9. Quiet operation
The humming found with many older light fixtures doesn’t happen with LED. They are just as quiet as they are consistent.
10. Range of colors unprecedented
To infinity, and beyond?
Well, it just so happens, that LED lights have pushed the human-made light color spectrum to new lengths. The range of colors now available are unprecedented in the lighting world – and we’ve only just begun.
11. Fit just about anywhere
The diode that makes up an LED light is about 1 mm, and getting smaller! LED lights do feature larger diodes, but some companies are racing to make them the size of a pencil led. This race to small means what's already in use just about anywhere, and in any way possible, will be even lower.
12. Limitless design possibilities with shapes and sizes
That’s right; they fit anywhere. A major positive of LED lighting comes in the form of being so flexible with their design capabilities. The designers making lighting today is thrilled to have a blank canvas so malleable that seemingly everything is possible. The light weight nature of LED fixtures makes them candidates for big sizes to be suspended almost effortlessly.
13. We’ve only just begun – LED is the future
LED is truly the future of lighting – and beyond!
LED lighting technology is already being used to make fancy tail decorations for horses, colorful dresses to be worn out and about, and even an LED table cloth.
Are these benefits of LED lighting? You be the judge. However, the uses of LED lights to harness creativity has led to a host of unique and fun concepts.
Notable applications:
Solar powered LED sunroof – The solar powered aspect might be the best part.
LED eyelashes – Yup, they evidently make the eyes look bigger.
LED wallpaper – it’s only natural that you’d have an entire wall that glows whatever color you decide it to be, depending on whatever reason the moment dictates. It’s like having a TV as a wall, or vice versa.
LED contact lenses – The linked article references the Terminator, so we’ll leave that right there.
14. Beat the cold (LED shows up for work no matter how cold it is)
For those living near the equator, this may be less of a realization of LED technology benefits. For those who live where the temperature drops, they can make full use of the advantage of LED cold resistance.
A must have:
LED lights react differently than all other forms of lighting when the weather gets severely cold. They don’t respond at all. So, if you’ve got a blizzard, your diodes won’t be affected (unless they get hit by a snow plow or some other calamity befalls them).
15. Consistent light emitted from the first day to last
Individual bulbs lose intensity as they age. Many LED lights that are already in use today will be just as bright on their last day as they are today. A major selling point of LED lighting (quality) is that it won’t fade or lose effectiveness as it ages.
16. Bring the sky indoors
A sky is the limit minded designer recently made the ceiling in their office area light up the heavens. It hits on the quality of light and mood of the individual aspects we’ve touched on here, and it’s just plain cool!
17. A realistic depiction of a model world
Model railroaders swear by LEDs. They use them in their locomotives, and in the signals and lights about their tiny little towns.
How many LEDs can you spot in this POV style video of The Great Train Story at Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry?
Our tech says: 130+ LED bulbs lighting the buildings, plus 12 trains have an LED headlight and number-board light. So ... likely ~150.
— MSI Chicago (@msichicago) June 14, 2017
18. Nobel worthy science
In 2014, three scientists were awarded the Nobel Prize in physics for inventing the LED. They won because it offered the greatest benefit to humanity, particularly when energy grids are non-existent.
19. Built to last a long time, so you’ll need fewer bulbs
Most LED packaging, in contemporary figures, will estimate bulb life to be around 13 years at 3 hours per day. Anyone who has great fixtures and a fear of heights (me), will see this as an unbeatable advantage to LED light bulbs. It's also significant when you consider how early we are in the LED plight bulb proliferation.
LED lights for everyday consumers have only begun to hit the market, yet they are already significantly improved over Compact Fluorescent Bulbs (CFLs), which was already state of the art over the incandescent bulbs that have been available (in some form) for over a century.
20. Durable, so less risk of breakage
Both incandescent bulbs and CFLs are highly breakable - you drop them, and there's a dangerous mess to go along with a risk of injury. Shipping those bulbs has also proven to be a challenge, both for manufacturers and retailers. While LED lights are not unbreakable, they are a lot tougher than almost any other option on the market today.
LED lights don’t have the fragile little hazardous filament to worry about either:
21. No mercury
Mercury is a problem throughout the country. It quickly works its way into streams and rivers, polluting fish and drinking water. Numerous illnesses owe proliferation to Mercury levels exceeding the threshold safe for human consumption. That’s a bleak picture, so having no mercury in LED lights is a major win for everyone! LED lights for all…
22. Instant turn on
Some bulbs take a long time to truly “turn on,” but LED lights don’t have this problem. The diode technology that drives LED lights works instantaneously when the switch is flicked on. Without this feature, there would be no fancy light show tunnels in Las Vegas to ogle over.
23. Better output measurement – Lumens over watts
Watts is a measure of power, not light. You can make an estimation of light output, provided you’re at full power. You may not be, and not even know it. Rest assured, though, as LED lights get measured in lumens – a direct benefit for the light they produce.
24. Dimmable (if you purchase dimmable fixtures/bulbs)
LED lights can be dimmable, if you buy them that way, so make sure they are in fact dimmable on the packaging/description if you’re looking for that feature. If you don’t need dimmable, then don’t bother, as it will save you a little cash on each bulb.
25. Your produce deserves modern LED lighting
Produce, typically in the form of apples, bananas, potatoes, and tomatoes, are more susceptible to fluorescent light standard in older kitchens. These are the fruits and veggies that are typically on the counter or table, so the light does matter.
With the LED bulbs (common in new refrigerators for this reason), you won’t hasten the demise of your perishables, which means this gain from LED is also a cost saver.
Side note (for your benefit):
If chilled, apples, grapes, all types of berries, and oranges will last a bit longer. So, if you have room in your fridge (especially one of those new LED light ones), you’ll get more life out of your produce items.
26. Government rebate programs at all levels (varies by location)
The government, sometimes more than others, offers incentive programs for upgrading to LED. Here is a great resource to find out what’s available where you live: http://www.dsireusa.org/
27. Save on disposal costs (can typically be recycled)
Commercial LED lighting is catching on fast. Why? It's partly due to the lack of harmful materials used in the creation of LED lighting and LED light bulbs.
You can make a difference:
While not mandated, please recycle LED bulbs, as they are made up of mostly recyclable material.
28. Work place ambiance control – set a mood that makes people happy at work… (Also a recruitment benefit)
Advantages of led lighting in offices are more than just bottom-line asset management. When a potential new hire walks in, you want to impress them. This fact is true for guests to your home too. It’s always important to leave a good first impression. So, acquire the asset of LED lighting to set the mood that matches your company’s culture, and creates the right vibe.
29. Work place attendance
Typical office lighting leads to migraines, among other health concerns
Migraines are awful. Migraines afflict more than 30 million Americans, leading many to leave work early or stay at home due to the sensitivity to light that’s believed to attribute to worsening all types of headaches. According to a recent study, even people stricken with blindness have a sensitivity to light to the point of getting migraines.
For more on ambiance, check out our blog on the subject.
30. Security
Keeping lights on during off-hours costs money, but it’s safer that way.
Don't count on luck:
With the efficiency, long life, and weather resilience of LED lights, it’s much easier to keep the lights burning brightly on a dark, foreboding night. The security benefits, as outlined in our expert tips on home security, strongly recommend a well-lit exterior.
Keeping lights on eliminates dark, shadowy places for would be intruders to hide – both home and business. A well-lit interior also protects whether someone is there, whether someone is asleep (in the case of home lighting), or makes intruders visible from the outside.
31. IoT Mandate
Get ready, because tech experts are making corollaries to further adoption of the Internet of Things and LED technology. IoT experts see the major superiority of LED technology and how it has evolved for their inter-device designs.
In fact, you may need to be LED to stay connected in a more global society...
Also, smart lighting control, a cornerstone of IoT, is a significant aspect of LED Lights and the technology behind them. Although pricey, you can get phone operated blue tooth LED bulbs that also serve as speakers for music.
32. Brand signage
Don’t let current limitations keep your name in the dark!
LED lights are ideal for illuminating signage, especially for unique brands that feature cool or dynamic looks.
33. Prices have come down
The cost of upgrading to LED has already dropped significantly. With all technology, it’s always a matter of time before significant price breaks come in the form of cost reductions for the manufacturer.
The LED market isn’t new, and the decades of development mean you’re getting LEDs for a fraction of the price you would have just a few years ago.
34. Models for specific applications (can be designed on a custom basis - http://kenall.com/Home)
There is a fixture optimized for any commercial or industrial space. Whether that be a prison, where safety and brightness are of the utmost importance, or a hospital where the cleanest (and easiest to clean) fixtures are mandatory, there’s an LED option designed to suit the need.
LED lights may even save your life...
35. Clean enough for the medical field (Check out http://kenall.com/Indigo-Clean)
As a continuation from the hospital remark above, there is a science of using LED lights to activate chemicals to clean bacteria. As it turns out, health benefits of led lighting reach far beyond the sensory level...
36. Bragging rights… aka Marketing value
Many companies – especially retailers – brag about their energy certifications. This makes consumers feel good, and it helps the bottom line with significant cost savings.
37. Proven Savings
A hardware chain recently revealed a 40% energy savings for their business locations that switched to all LED.
38. Red light therapy for skin care
Wrinkles, fine lines, and acne scars are three of the many foes under fire through red LED lights.
The LED light therapy blogs recommend blue diodes for active acne. The more you know.
39. Relaxation therapy
Nothing takes the edge off a long hard day like some LED lights. As odd as it sounds, some believe it works. However, it is true that LED lights for the home are typically more relaxing. For more on a relaxing home, check out a blog from Healthline on the matter.
40. Whiter teeth?
It's true. LED lights are used to enhance and accelerate the whitening gel used by dentists and other orthodontic professionals to whiten one's teeth.
In summary, LED lights are a great investment. LED technology is durable and cost efficient, likely being the best option for you, that's openly available on the market today. The LED revolution is only starting to take hold…
Note the content of this blog being relevant to top quality items. Cheap, bargain LED options from big-box stores are not necessarily going to have the same consistency as the quality LED brands we have vetted for our store.

1. Consider the height of your bedside table or night stand. You’ll want the lampshade to shield direct light from your eyes while still providing plenty of illumination for your reading or craft work. The bottom of the shade should be about a foot above the top of your mattress. Generally, lamps that are 24” to 28” tall overall will be ideal but bedside table heights can vary so measure.
2. Choose soft light bulbs and softly diffused shades. You’ll want your light to be relaxing while still providing plenty of gentle illumination for the entire room, as this will generally be the last light in the room. Soft light bulbs avoid harsh brightness and assist in winding down for relaxing sleep.
3. Style is the most easily overlooked quality of bedside lighting. Take advantage of the multitudes of styles available for bedside lamps and make yours a reflection of your individual taste and personality. It is easy to underestimate the comfort provided by a beautiful lamp. Give yourself the gift of a lamp that will give you a happy relaxed feeling when you use it every night.
At LampsUSA, our experts are ready to assist you with selecting the lamp that will have you rushing to peaceful relaxation at the end of a busy day!
]]>Insider preview of 6 explosive trends in office design. Take a sneak peek into your future work-space.
]]>How will your office change in the next 2 years? The 2017 NeoCon Office Furniture show just wrapped up in Chicago and here is a insider sneak peek at the new trends coming soon to an office near you.
Without exception, the biggest single trend that most offices are not ready for is the rapid shift toward sit/stand desks. Virtually EVERYONE who displayed a desk at NeoCon had a standing option. Most are height adjustable desks that let you sit or stand at the push of a button. Super cool and sleek. Since only about 10% of office workers stand up during part of their workday, the standing-at-work trend still has a long way to expand. With American office workers becoming educated about the dangers of over-sitting, we should continue to see more standing desks in our offices. Most are very minimalist in design, with less storage for files, so be ready to reduce your paper files and get more organized. Standing conference tables also will be ushering in more "standing meetings" to keep members more engaged and keep meetings shorter and more focused. Ever since sitting was declared the "new smoking", the rapid expansion of stand up desks was inevitable.
If you can't bear the thought of standing all day, maybe you can add motion to your chair. Lots of options to balance, wobble, lean and glide your way to more productivity. Active sitting started with balance balls, but now takes many forms from sitting to leaning. Surprisingly stable, these motion chairs give your core, legs and torso a mild exercise routine. These motion seats give you a workout all day without you really noticing it.
George Jetson, meet the millennials. Will the cubicle transition to a futuristic work-pod? These individual work-stations are best suited as temporary space to focus on a hot project, isolated from distractions. A private sanctuary to get away from the bustle of your open office so you can power out on your project. Pods could work well for tele-commuters who don't have a permanent desk at the office. Most of these individual "lounges" provide back support in an "alert-recline" position. An adjustable, angled work surface fits your laptop or tablet. A footrest? Who thought you would ever have your feet up at work?
Glass walls help promote the "open-office" environment. So even when "behind closed doors" you are still connected to the workplace and even if co-workers can't hear you, everyone is connected.
Ah, April in Paris. I had never experienced the pleasure until this year, when I was lucky enough to see Paris first hand. The weather was cool, but it did not dampen the thrill of exploring the “city of light” for the first time. Paris has an endless collection of iconic sites that a newcomer is obligated to visit.
]]>Since our Air BNB was located on the Left Bank, in the Latin Quarter, we were only a short walk to Notre Dame, which is on an island in the center of the Seine River. So our first stop was the 800 year old cathedral popularized by bell-ringer Quasimodo. Notre Dame is an awe inspiring site due to its majesty. Flying buttresses, gargoyles, intricate details and many spires give you so many places to look. The exterior features excellent examples of gothic post lights. Here is one that lights up the St. John Paul II statue.
Inside, they mostly rely on sunlight and a few large brass chandeliers.
A stroll down the Champs Elysees (perhaps the most expensive shopping in the world) took us to the famous Arch, which is surrounded by a chaotic round-about. So we accessed the arch from underground. The Arch de Triomphe did not have much lighting, but it offered a great 360 degree view of the city at dusk.
Seen in the above image, the iconic capture of the liberation of Paris during WWII. This image encapsulated the arch becoming hollowed ground. The following photo shows the view from the top of the Arch de Triomphe, facing downtown Paris, France.
Perhaps the most famous museum in the world, the Louvre is the home of the Mona Lisa and Venus de Milo among countless other priceless gems. More gothic and European style lighting graces the exterior of the Louvre.
Across the Seine, a short walk west of the Louvre sits a regal erstwhile train station that now holds some of the best French impressionist art. The Orsay is much easier to cover in one session and is home to some artful light fixtures. Glass pendants and antique clock in the grand hall View of Montmarte thru the roman clock Even the pendants in the cafeteria were wavy brass delights.
This grand opera house is one of the most impressive buildings in Paris. The exterior features classic euro design and gold statues. Gothic exterior lights feature sharpened spires and intricate details. Inside, the grand staircase leads to the 2,000 seat theatre. Check out the elaborate brass chandeliers and brass post lights. Perhaps the most famous chandelier in the world hangs high above the opera theatre. This enourmous fixture supposedly fell on the audience during the Phantom tale.
A short metro ride southwest of the city took us to Versailles. King Louis the XIV needed to upgrade his hunting lodge, so what the heck, why not build a palace? Versailles features over-the-top opulence. No expense was spared (As Mel Brooks said, “It’s good to be king!”) The hall of mirrors features dozens of huge crystal chandeliers. Brass and Crystal combine for a classic pre-electricity chandelier.
After touring Montemarte cathedral, we walked down to the sketchy Boulevard de Clichy. (Not a great place for kids at night.) Glowing in the distance, we found the famous dance hall Moulin Rouge.
I couldn’t resist the “gumdrop” pendants as we sadly had to leave the city of light.
Next stop, Vienna and Salzburg. Our Austrian adventure.

]]>The transitional style home has taken the interior design and decorating world by storm. Transitional decorating ideas seem limitless, due to the now common molding of contemporary and traditional styles (shapes, finishes, materials, and fabrics).
This new way of looking at the world of design comes as LED light technology pushes the world towards some of the coolest, most unique lighting ever seen. Many of these don’t suit a strict traditional pallet, but with art, there’s something for everyone. Enter transitional lighting.
Peering into the transitional world of interior design and lighting, with Et2’s Inca Collection, will allow for the understanding of a loosely defined, but highly adopted style trend that’s defined by the merging of contemporary and traditional styles.
Contemporary styles, with their notable simplicity (for the most part), are the lynchpin to this success. Et2’s designs seem to fit this mold as well as any other, so looking at the Inca collection, and its limitless room shot inventory, will enable a picture by picture demonstration of what will be discussed.
“Simplicity is elegance,” a great screen writer once quipped between puffs of a cigarette. While true of storytelling, these three words can be utter about most things in life. Many traditional stylists go after an elegance in their design, and if simplicity is elegance, then contemporary designs with simple characteristics will play nice with traditional styles.
Et2’s Inca Collection pushes the structural simplicity element to the brink, but the monochromatic coloring makes it perfectly suited for transitional spaces.
A color note: Consider the ultra-popular white antler chandeliers. Antler chandeliers have long been Pidgeon holed for some wooded hunting lodge, tucked deep in the wilderness, but not anymore. Many manufacturers offer several white washed antler chandeliers that have been proven to mix well where white is the unifying element. These chandeliers also make a great statement piece, as seen below at the Kohler Design Center.
With Et2’s sleek polished chrome finish on the Inca collection, a cleanliness is complimented by the circle shape. Nothing is perfect in the natural world, but the man-made circle shape is typically crafted to round perfection. The intricate curvy lines of the Inca collection pattern are also contained by these circles, maintaining the clean design essential for effective transitional lighting.
A note about shape: The use of curved and straight lines in furniture is a keystone factor in traditional spaces, so most pendants, with their straight line drop and round shade, are ideally suited for transitional lighting.
Images of Inca Collection in transitional spaces - from ET2's look book.
Here, you have crown molding and earth tones dominating the space. Without seeing the whole room, one can't truly judge the space, however, elements mentioned above are typically found in traditional spaces. The artwork calls this out as a dining space.
With all of that in mind, you see a contemporary light fixture featuring a simple, monochromatic design. Does it work? While the earth tone chosen for the wall and ceiling are not for everyone (the author of this content included), it does work. The transitional lighting nature of the Inca Collection is why it works.
A nice, clean space with customary traditional furniture and trim work. Who wouldn't mind a night crashing in this comfy, transitional space? The choice of colors and furniture are both highly simple, making a simple contemporary fixture a great fit to make this stand out as a great transitional space.
The simplicity of the Inca collection works perfectly with the simplicity of this space.
Here, you have a traditional dining area, complete with the trademark chair design common in many homes. The addition of the charcoal paints, accent chairs, and rugs set the tone for a transitional space to eat meals and have a good time.
The Inca Collection Pendant hanging over the table is ideally suited to match both the simple aesthetics, and the many tones of gray/silver found in this space.
This deco home is in great shape. Built over 70 years ago, it still looks relatively new. So, if a space is kept in tip-top shape, why not consider transitional lighting? That's exactly what the home owners decided to do. The result of transitional lighting gives a well kept traditional home another feature that feels new, and quite fresh as well.
Moving up to the bedroom, where there is a distinction common with many homes of this era - a short ceiling without above attic space. Bedrooms in that era were highly practical, but not without leaving room for imagination in both storage space and looks. Many deco homes are getting the transitional lighting treatment - in part - for this reason.
This remarkable, yet simple space is ideally suited for the Inca Collection. Again, there are plenty of greyscale tones that are a compliment to the sleek silver finish of the Inca Collection.
Again, there is a simple color pallet and lighting from the Inca Collection - a semi-flush pendant. This deco house is consistent, using similar greyscale tones and sleek Inca Collection transitional lighting. The shot of the lighting in the mirror is a fun touch, but the mirror also shines light on some simple, greyscale artwork to tie into the theme of this home.
Let them have transitional lighting. Transitional lighting is popular because it's so inclusive. Gone are the days of traditional versus contemporary. The verdict for any assessment in lighting is clear - make it yours, and love it because it's what you love in lighting. It really is having your cake and eating it too!
]]>The popularity of bulbs mimicking this recent discovery is no mystery, just look at how cool they are. It doesn’t take a lighting expert to look at one of these bulbs and be impressed.
You’ve probably also heard them referred to as Edison bulbs, as they pay homage to Thomas Edison’s discoveries and inventions in Menlo Park, New Jersey that made the electric bulb possible in the first place.
Early bulbs had a paper filament that glowed bright orange in a transparent glass bulb, which is exactly how one would describe the current vintage industrial era bulbs that we’re selling by the dozens here in the Lamps USA warehouse.
The contemporary vintage bulb or vintage Edison style light bulb, whatever you want to call them, are typically LED or at least a highly efficient visible filament of some sort.
]]>Set the mood with the best ambient lighting in a room and you'll go from zero to hero in no time.
]]>Ambient light is the most pleasing, in that it’s soft, even, and easy on the eyes. Ambient light helps fill a space with a warmth, and an at home feel you’ll want to set the tone for any romantic evening.
Natural light is typically a great source for ambient light, and Lamps USA does offer Full-Spectrum daylight substitutes like the Happy Light, but that’s not the romantic focus here. The Happy Light is a great winter doldrums beating gift idea though (hint-hint).
Assuming there’s insufficient natural lighting available in February, let’s take a look at the rest of the ways to get the ambiance right with ambient light.
It’s important not to overpower your scene with too much overhead light. This is where designer lighting truly shines, and where dimmers make their hay. If neither of those options are at your disposal, consider leaving some lights in the off position.
Basically, turn down the lights, and turn up the charm.
Accent lights work well to fill in the spaces where your overhead lighting doesn’t quite measure up. It helps achieve that even, well-lit environment you’ll need to get the ambiance right with ambient light. Make sure you choose the right accent lamp shade for the purpose, luckily we have 100's of lamp shades for sale right here.
Three primary (and most relevant) types of accent light include:
Also, consider a plug-in dimmer switch to get the lighting at the level you want.
So, you’ve got a big, super romantic dinner planned at home. You need to carefully dice and slice some veggies, without killing the vibe by either drowning out the ambience in the space with overwhelming bright overhead light, or by cutting your hand because you can’t see.
Task lighting allows you to focus the light you need where you are doing that cutting, without killing the vibe – or drawing blood.
Take for instance the Bright Reader LED task light. It’s got reader in the name, but this versatile bestselling task light provides the perfect light needed in a focused area without stealing away the romantic setting you are creating.
This is the cherry on top of your several layer lighting pie. This is where personalization and a touch of charm can put your space over the top.
Lamps USA offers a wide array of decoration pieces that are nice additions to a cozy, well lit space.
This is also a prime opportunity for use of an elegant candle holder set, as well. What’s more romantic than candlelight?
There are plenty of Pinterest ideas on the Lamps USA Romantic Lighting Ideas board if you’re into DIY projects.
Think fun, be inspired by your love, and don't forget about flowers.
]]>We had the Summer Olympics in London, Michael Phelps became the most decorated olympian in history, and the "Curiousity Rover" successfully landed on Mars.
Back in 2012 (and still true today), the lighting industry was also seeing some sizable shifts.
Riding big waves of change, 2012 became a banner year for the Dallas lighting market as its strongest release of new products in several years. This growth and expansion are due to the natural progression of creativity in lighting trends, and a “pent-up” demand from American consumers who are looking for something new and innovative, inviting manufacturers to take risks on new designs and technology.
After all, Lightovation, the Dallas International Lighting Show, is about the intersection of lighting and innovation.
Update: Innovation is bigger than ever. In the post recession economy, a cleaner, more versatile manufacturing and design focus has transcended not just the lighting industry, but all of American goods and services. With competition so stringent, coming up with new ideas and adaptations of existing ideas is paramount to success.
Products of these trends target commercial and residential customers. Light fixtures now offer compact designs as well as added features, made more attractive by lower prices.
Update: After the initial price shock of new LED technology, more manufacturers have hit the lighting scene and dramatically reduced costs. With any new technology, there is always a period of the high price before the manufacturing process can refine and cut costs that significantly affect market pricing.
Circles and ovals are presently dominating the lighting scene as active design elements, while Oil Rub Bronze retains its spot as a dominant finish. However, companies are testing the waters with lighter finishes on their pieces, but so far these haven’t spiked any reliable trends. On the other hand, copper finishes are on the rise.
Update: The circular trend that dominated 2012's offerings appears to be back in force five years later. Companies like Kichler, Hinkley, Feiss, Et2, ELK, and more have revolutionized lighting designs and set the stage for a new way to look at an overhead light. Many new manufacturers have also started to dabble in circular light shapes. The reason for even more circular designs? Affordable and reliable LED options.
One back to the future trend is Old Fashioned Bulbs, which show up in many newly designed items this year. Also, many companies are introducing Retro Pendants, featuring a restoration style for today’s modern home.
Update: These are the hottest trend on the market today, which means full user adoption has occurred and they are near their peak of popularity. Check out the Lamps USA "Get the Look" segment on industrial era lighting.
Also, chandeliers are taking on a more sparkly feel—with crystal emerging as a trending accent— and are popping up in several light lines. Many companies are shifting to laser cut metal in most of their designs, creating a whole new world of lighting creativity.
Update: A familiar story is emerging about these trends. As they were all developing in 2012, five years later they have become near standard. All manufacturers have dabbled in laser cut technology, paving the way for the coolest designs we've seen yet.
Check out the Lamps USA collection of weird, cool, and altogether fun lighting for examples. Just don't forget a subsequently cool lamp shade to go with!
Trends in the lighting world have a long shelf life, which is great when you are forking over some serious cash to update your space. In fact, many of the top lighting brands see their products transcend time and style to have an everlasting grander.
]]>Get in the know with this post about contemporary home makeovers.
]]>There are usually two common reasons that prompt people to go for a remodeling job: one, they don’t like the way things look, and two, the layout of the place is no longer efficient.
Lighting is an effective tool for creating striking decorative effects; multiple lighting layers have been proven to help you maximize the cosmetic potential in a house by making it appear more spacious than it really is.
A simple change of lighting, or bright eye-popping color, can usually transform a room from bland or ordinary to something extraordinary - without breaking the bank.
Of late, kitchens and bathrooms have become a focal point for remodels. As seen on various home makeover TV shows, it's the kitchen and bath areas that make or break a home's value.
Lighting under cabinets has gone from a cool, unique thing in nice kitchens to a must have in any contemporary remodel. The proliferation of LED technology has spurred this change, as well as bringing forth stunning fixture designs that can drop jaws and steal the show.
Hide your appliances, as they no longer are the iconic indication of success. Those microwave oven adverts from the 50's set the tone for being proud of appliances, but the elements of contemporary style take preference to a more subdued appearance.
Bathroom remodels, on the other hand, are introducing “his and her vanities”—the answer to the age-old inconvenience of guys having to sort through endless rows of skin creams and lotions, and girls digging through men’s shaving cream and colognes.
Double vanities with dark wood paneling are particularly attractive this year, as well as granite and marble sink tops.
Ceiling height mirrors are also emerging this year as a way to give the illusion of spaciousness in cozy bathrooms.
Energy-efficiency seems to be one of the important themes this year, as solar thermal systems make a comeback in solar powered heat tubs, as well as the rise in energy-saving lighting fixtures. At the same time, appliances go extremely high-tech as wireless technology takes over the home.
Appliances may now be built to be accessible from your smartphone, and home layouts are now being altered to maximize Wi-Fi access. Colored therapy LED lighting is an exciting new trend that many are looking forward to this year.
Designers are coming up with new ways to affect mood by changing light colors. For instance, blue is used to produce a soothing effect, and red has a more vibrant, energetic feel. Other remodelling trends for 2012 include the return of bare flooring as opposed to elaborate carpeting patterns.
Tiled and hardwood floors are particularly popular at present, with many designers opting to go with more environmentally-friendly flooring covers, such as cork. Warm, earthy colors remain top of the list on trending color themes, as opposed to bright and flashy hues.

Technically, this category could suit all of the above, but this also presents a low-cost opportunity to give a man with a man cave something cool. These corks may have been developed for wine bottles, but they also fit in beer, whiskey, or any other novelty bottle you can think of. What a great up-cycling opportunity to make a unique gift all your own!

Why do the Movember thing, isn’t it passe at this point?
Sure, it’s not a new thing, but it still matters to me. Cancer seems to be a reality we all face at some point in our lives, and in recent years it has wreaked havoc on my family. When the chance comes up to help raise awareness about something I care deeply about, I eagerly jump on board no matter the perceived notion of the trend.

]]>For this exercise, the creative team at LampsUSA salvaged some lampshades damaged in shipping. A whole box of scratch and dent shades is a whole lot of blank canvas ready for exploration and fun!
]]>"Create art, excitement, fun... not more waste for the landfill."
What do you do when a delivery driver inadvertently crunches a box full of lamp shades? Although rare, it does happen, and when it does we cannot and will not sell the product to our customers. If we can’t sell them, then do we have to throw them away? Absolutely not, it’s time to start painting lamp shades.
As part of an ongoing effort to practice what we pin, the creative team at LampsUSA has taken in these lamp shades and given them a new life as an illuminating expression of art. It may not be the glitz and glamour that brings in money at an art auction, but it’s fun and it does its little part to save space in a nearby landfill. Reduce, reuse, and recycle – right?
Painting lamp shades is fun and easy, but there are some tips to consider.
Not all tape is made equal
For most of these lamps we used masking tape to create designs that are one of a kind. Ironically, some of the pricier blue painter’s tape with edge control technology was the worst performer (assumed it's best to use on interior walls). Our recommendation for painting lamp shades of this type? Scotch by 3M brand masking tape, because it had no bleed issues.
Here's a secondary painting lamp shades tip for using inferior tape. If you paint your shade one color, then want to add secondary accents, you have a great option to lock your tape to the canvas you’re using. Simply paint the shade in one color, let it dry completely, then put down your tape design. Next, repeat the same color the shade already is BEFORE painting the second color. Repeating the first color will fill in any bleed areas and bond the tape edge to the lampshade surface.
Lastly, when painting with spray paint, do your best to use thin coats. Think, runny coats of paint are a major culprit for bleed issues.
What paint should I buy for painting lamp shades?
We used multi-purpose spray paint already on hand. Krylon MAXX finishes work great on all surfaces, as do the Rustoleum multi-surface paint offerings. It’s a good bet that if the paint is suited for “plastic, wood, metal, and more” you’re going to do alright painting lamp shades.
Where should I look to find my inspiration?
Painting lamp shades that suit what you want can be really easy, with the only hurdle being the design itself. For pattern choice, we recommend you do what we did and play around. Get some tape and a shade to see what will work. If there is a specific lamp you want to adorn with your new shade, then do your best to accent décor and other elements of the room.
Don’t forget to be safe
Painting lamp shades can be fun, but it also can be very dangerous. Be sure, if you’re using spray paint, that you are doing so in a well-ventilated area. Also, be sure to wear respirator protection. Follow all guidelines from the paint company’s manufacturer, and don’t touch the lampshades until fully dry. Also, be sure to allow any off gassing of spray paint fumes to occur before bringing the lampshade into your home.
Other safety aspects include choosing a hard back lamp shade and a bulb that doesn't generate a ton of heat. We use energy efficient low-heat bulbs, and didn't test this with any hot-burning filaments. If you do so, you will be accessing your own risk.
Here are the byproducts of our time painting lamp shades. Each reclaimed lampshade was taped off with a one-of-one uniqueness and painted with a multi-surface polymer spray paint.

]]>I went to Hobby Lobby, walked around for about 45 minutes - there is just so much stuff! - before finally obtaining the FOUR things I went there for.
What the DIY Called For | What I Actually Bought |
12-inch-diameter hanging planter basket | 12-inch decorative basket (I guess flower planters are out of season at the end of October?) |
silver spray paint | silver spray paint (I wanted to get some sparkly stuff, but decided the garland was sparkly enough) |
crystal garland | crystal-ish holiday garland (3 strands, 6 feet each) |
3 picture hangers |
3 picture hangers (comes in a pack of 4) |
If you decide to make this chandelier any time after summer, good luck finding a hanging planter basket. I had to settle for a decorative basket, which I spray painted silver. However, if you are lucky enough to get one, remove the hanging chains and filler from the basket before painting. I really wanted to use a silver paint that had glitter in it, but once I found the garland, decided that would be overkill. I used a metallic silver spray paint instead. I painted the basket and let it dry overnight. Sorry, no pictures of that since I did it at night, outside, under some outdoor flood lights.
I could tell the garland was going to be a problem as soon as I started wrapping it around the basket. Once I started, I 100% regretted what I had chosen for my DIY. The original blog post called for wire garland. There was no wire garland at Hobby Lobby that I could find, so I grabbed some that was strung together with fishing line. It kept getting tangled and took about 5 minutes to wrap around once. I want to do this again, but I will not be buying this garland. When the cashier called it a “hot mess,” I knew it was going to be problematic, but it was between this $7 holiday garland and some $10 wedding garland that was shorter.
So the garland kept getting tangled, but once I got a system down to mostly keep it away from itself while I was weaving it through the basket, it became pretty easy. But that was only the first string, and it took about 45 minutes. After I developed a system, the second strand took only about 15 minutes. I didn’t use the third garland because there was enough hanging from the original strands to make it look OK (and the bottom of the basket was a star pattern anyway… festive).
The finishing touch was hooking the picture hangers on the sides. I used three of the four in the package, which is what the original project called for.
All in all, I was pretty skeptical of how it was going to turn out at first, given my frustration and the way the garland was, but I think it turned out pretty OK. I will probably hang on to it and take it with me the next time I move.
What did I learn? I would have put a coat of primer on before spray painting had I known that it was going to rub off as I was threading the garland. At least it's on the inside so you can’t see where paint came off. I would also try harder to find the correct kind of garland (wire instead of fishing line); it probably would have made my life easier. Unfortunately, there are no flush mounts in this office to give an illustration of the final feel.
Final score: 8/10. I like the way it turned out.

]]>LampsUSA offers a colorful array of discount lamp shades for sale. This is not about those shades.
The LampsUSA staff grabbed a handful of economy shades that were simple in both color and shape.
The team used a sharpie and doodled a quick contour map (not to scale) to take advantage of the vintage map paper aesthetics already in place.
The team used a crafter's knife to cut out cloud shapes, then used spray paint to paint shade from black to midnight blue. Using a can of spray on adhesive, the team applied some parchment paper to create translucent white clouds.
Starting with some masking tape, the team created a fun pattern on the shade
For this project, the team created a make-shift paint booth and wore proper protection of course.
Paint issues came up due to lack of expertise, so the team changed gears on the fly and added in some acrylics to cover up the runny spray paint.
So-so results aesthetically speaking, however, the best result was always going to be the fun in creating it.

But the earth keeps spinning around and not all rooms have the windows that we would like. For long nights and windowless rooms, a great healthy solution is the use of Full Spectrum lamps. Technically, sunlight is “full spectrum” light, ranging from infrared to near ultra-violet. Full Spectrum light, while not as powerful as sunlight, provides the closest representation of natural light available in the lighting marketplace.
Benefits of full spectrum lighting include improved productivity (due to increased alertness), eye strain reduction, elevated mood and better sleep quality. Not surprising when one considers how impacted animals are by nature. With full spectrum lamps, you can take control and bring the sunshine indoors on the cloudiest day.
We can’t control the amount of sun that shines from the sky so let’s enjoy it when we can! Happy Daylight Appreciation Day!

]]>Pendant lights are also known as drops or suspenders. These hanging lights can immediately add life to an otherwise boring space. Pendant lights are generally used for their decorative aspects. They just look great installed in rows or placed individually in certain spots in your home. Additionally, they not only give your living space a facelift, they also provide useful illumination.
What’s great about retro pendant lights is that they can give enough light without using up too much energy like a chandelier would. Plus, you can even use them as task-light room-accents. Simply install them over your kitchen counter or your study area and you will have focused light for doing the tasks you need to finish.
So, how do you incorporate retro lights into your space? Simple! Just add them to a room with a rich base color such as brown or grey. The solid colors of your walls will make the funky colors and designs stand out.
Are you convinced that going retro is what you should do? Don’t worry! There are lots of places where you can get your hands on your retro pendant lights – light fixture stores, auctions, online shops and garage sales. Just be sure to pick the light fixture that will complement the room you want to install it in.
In conclusion, a pendant light is a simple fixture but can add character to a bland space. So, this means that retro pendant lights add style to your home. You can see this for yourself when you switch them on and the fixtures create fantastic colors in your living space.

StarStrand LED tape, available in a wide range of color temperatures from a warm golden glow to sparkling white light, provides new opportunities for lighting small spaces, once inaccessible by traditional bulb technology.
Available in 12V and 24V tape and enclosed as channel lighting, StarStrand’s energy-efficient technology provides both practical and artistic illumination. A single ENERGY STAR-qualified LED light bulb can last up to 25,000 hours, and use 75% less energy than an incandescent light bulb.
In addition to energy savings advantages, StarStrand is easy to install and works indoors and outdoors to highlight the latest architectural features in home design such as floating vanities, ceiling coves and recessed walls and niches.
In the bedroom, StarStrand LED tape performs as a designer night-light when installed underneath the bed for subtle edge lighting or routered in the baseboard for pathway lighting.
LEDs work well as an invisible light source to create visual interest in bathrooms. Install StarStrand LED tape underneath a vanity or countertop to outline forms or backlight a translucent surface such as Onyx to cast a warm glow.
StarStrand is a great problem-solver for windowless spaces. Create a faux window made of frosted glass lined in the back with dimmable LED tape to mimic daytime to dusk lighting.
In the kitchen, StarStrand LED tape or channel lighting works well under cabinets and inside cabinets. For under cabinet lighting, mount the LEDs as close as possible to the front of the cabinets to provide best light distribution. Under countertops, install LEDs at the edge so that the light grazes down onto the cabinet faces and combine it with LED toe kick lighting under the base cabinets for a stunning effect. Look for opportunities to light features such as plate racks and wine racks. Conceal LED tape behind the first row of the plate rack and throw light illuminating the dishes. For wine storage, LED lights are ideal because they give off less heat than other lighting sources better protecting wine bottles from deterioration.
In stairways, StarStrand LED tape lights the way underneath the banisters or stair risers for added safety and visibility.
Draw attention to architectural features by lighting a cove or tray ceiling with LED tape to reflect light off the ceiling giving the illusion of height. Show off artwork with LED tape lights hidden behind a painting.
Outdoors, LED tape lighting adds architectural dimension to pools, fountains, under awnings and pergolas. Light underneath outdoor furniture to create puddles of colorful light for a nightclub vibe.
In addition to LED tape and channel lighting, Maxim Lighting and ET2 Contemporary Lighting have a full line of fashion forward LED fixtures for indoor and outdoor use including the sleek “Edge Lit” technology of the MoonBeam collection and the ultra-durable, intricately styled Vivex outdoor lighting collection.
]]>Not many people realize that kitchens are dangerous places. There are knives and other sharp utensils in every corner. Even the food you handle can potentially hurt you, and the edge of an open can cover can easily give you more than a paper cut. If you spend a lot of time in the kitchen, then you know that there are several possible scenarios that end in you getting hurt.
If you don’t want every meal prep time to look like something out of a horror show, consider installing proper kitchen lights—meaning lights that don’t leave you straining your eyes while chopping onions. Kitchen light is supposed to give off a functional amount of light to ensure you can clearly see what you’re doing around the kitchen.
Also, there’s a reason that pendant lights are almost always found in the average kitchen. Aside from the stylish down rod that lends it an air of modern minimalism, pendant lights give a lot of bright, direct lighting to one specific area. If you have a kitchen island with pendant lights, it may be a good idea to store away your cutlery here, as well as other relatively sharp objects. It’s also an excellent place to do any chopping of vegetables, or carving of meat, because of the special kitchen lighting that will help you avoid missing every tiny swish of the knife.
LED lights are often excellent choices of lighting. These may be a little more expensive than your regular incandescent light, but they last a lot longer and are better sources of kitchen lighting. Even the small switch to LED lights might ultimately save you a finger or two. Unless, of course you’d like to examine the different kinds of lighting from the inside of an operating room.
