How Light Therapy Can Keep You Smiling Throughout WinterBet you never knew that light could change the way you felt about things. It’s actually a scientifically proven fact; light affects the release of hormones in your body, mainly those that control your sleep-wake cycle, which is why it’s a lot easier to fall asleep with the lights off. [read more...]

More importantly, light can also have some bearing on your mood. In fact, lack of regular exposure to sunlight has been known to lead to seasonal affective disorder, a condition characterized by depression and mood swings. It is also linked to why many suicides take place in the winter months, when people tend to be cooped up indoors.
Experts have recommended exposure to special kinds of light for individuals suffering from depression and other mood disorders. It’s actually quite convenient; all it takes is for you to sit under a lamp for a certain period of time each day. It’s called light therapy, and it sure beats having to take a multitude of drugs that leave you with unpleasant side effects.
It’s possible to chase away those annoying blues by simply changing your level of exposure to light. Sunlight is always the preferred kind of lighting, but that’s not always a feasible option all year round. This is why special light bulbs are used to mimic the same positive effects that sunlight has in restoring the body’s natural hormonal balance and circadian rhythms. Scientists have identified certain photo receptors in the human eye that allow you to recognize and respond to light.
As you already know, this contributes significantly to one’s mood. The photo receptors trigger the hypothalamus, which nudges the pineal gland to start producing serotonin, which is a hormone that renders you more energetic and alert. Without serotonin, you’d be curled up in the blankets thinking it would be better if you’d just slept the day away in bed, and hypersomnia does not a happy camper make.
Ensure that these light bulbs are exactly the right type, because depression and SAD respond better to a specific wavelength, which you can’t exactly find in an ordinary incandescent light bulb. You can even get a prescription from a doctor, to be absolutely sure. If you don’t have access to sunlight, stay in bright places and think happy thoughts. It may be snowing out, but at least you don’t have to be gloomy on the inside as well. Smile Throughout Winter with Light Therapy

How Kitchen Lighting Can Save You from an Unexpected Amputation
Sure, it might sound like a long shot, but millions of people every year accidentally cut themselves in the kitchen. While there’s nothing we can do about genetic clumsiness, improving lighting conditions in your kitchen can save you the trouble of having to go through life with one (maybe even more) finger less.

Not many people realize that kitchens are dangerous places. There are knives and other sharp utensils in every corner. Even the food you handle can potentially hurt you, and the edge of an open can cover can easily give you more than a paper cut. If you spend a lot of time in the kitchen, then you know that there are several possible scenarios that end in you getting hurt.
If you don’t want every meal prep time to look like a Saw movie sequel, consider installing proper kitchen lights—meaning lights that don’t leave you straining your eyes while chopping onions. Kitchen light is supposed to give off a functional amount of light to ensure you can clearly see what you’re doing around the kitchen.
Also, there’s a reason that pendant lights are almost always found in the average kitchen. Aside from the stylish down rod that lends it an air of modern minimalism, pendant lights give a lot of bright, direct lighting to one specific area. If you have a kitchen island with pendant lights, it may be a good idea to store away your cutlery here, as well as other relatively sharp objects. It’s also an excellent place to do any chopping of vegetables, or carving of meat, because of the special kitchen lighting that will help you avoid missing every tiny swish of the knife.
LED lights are often excellent choices of lighting. These may be a little more expensive than your regular incandescent light, but they last a lot longer and are better sources of kitchen lighting. Even the small switch to LED lights might ultimately save you a finger or two. Unless, of course you’d like to examine the different kinds of lighting from the inside of an operating room.

Ceiling Fan Tips
Looking to buy a new ceiling fan? The fortunate thing is, there’s a lot of good ones out there to choose from. Lots of ceiling fan companies rely on unique styles, catchy designs and added features to market their ceiling fans. With all the different models to choose from, here are a couple of tips to help you make the right buy.
Click here to browse LampsUSA Ceiling Fans.
First of all, consider the materials used to make the ceiling fan. If you live near the sea, you’re going to need fans with rust-free finishes, as well as blades that don’t tend to warp. Homes located along coastal areas are constantly exposed to salty air which eventually corrodes regular metal.
Another thing to think about is seasonality. Ceiling fans ought to be flexible enough to enable ventilation adjustment. For instance, the “downdraft” mode is when blades run counter clockwise, as this circulates cool air better. During cold weather, however, ceiling fans should be able to reverse the motors to circle clockwise, which keeps warm air from rising. Not many people are aware of this handy function, and you can find reverse switches along the top of the fan.
Regarding size, bigger is always better when it comes to ceiling fans. A regular sized ceiling fan usually spans 36 to 60 inches, from the tip of one blade to the opposite blade’s tip. Trends show that customers usually go for the 42- to 52- inch fans, which work well for rooms that measure an average of 12 x 12. A larger room of 20 x 20 is well-ventilated by ceiling fans measuring 52 inches. If you wish to buy a ceiling fan for a particularly large room, consider getting two ceiling fans instead. Space them evenly in the room to achieve equal ventilation.
Ceiling height is important, especially if you live in a slightly smaller apartment or dormitory. The standard distance from the floor to the ceiling is nine feet. If you have a ceiling that’s lower to the floor than nine feet, simply flush mount the fan to the ceiling. Check that you don’t bump into the fan, or that the motor blades don’t knock over any feature. On the other hand, for ceilings that are higher than average, a down rod for your ceiling fan is the practical solution; instead of being attached directly to the ceiling, the down rod holds the ceiling fan at a lower height. Otherwise, subsequent ventilation has no significant impact on the room. If you find out that your ceiling is slightly sloped, you can also use a downward rod that’s angled, to help keep the fan facing straight downward.
A word or two on decoration: if you want your ceiling fan to help improve your home design, opt for a unit that has three blades or fewer. If this doesn’t cut it for you, then fans with more than six blades are generally considered more attractive than fans with less. Many fans are somewhere in the middle, sporting four to five blades. Also, turn a fan on before buying, and observe if there is any wobbling, indicating imbalance among the blades.
Ceiling fans today usually have added features that help you maximize its function. Browse through ceiling fans that allow you to install light fixtures—it’s a great plus for better lighting and design.

Medicine has made plenty of progress in the last few years, and scientists are seeing even better findings in new, unconventional treatments. Light therapy is gaining a lot of attention in the medical field as an effective way of nourishing ailing cells. Studies have revealed that specific frequencies of light are effective as bacteriocidals, and can kill pathogens at the same time rejuvenate cells. Because of this, several efforts are being poured into developing light therapy as a feasible alternative treatment.
Individuals undergo light therapy (or phototherapy) by exposing themselves to specific light wavelengths. This is accomplished by using light emitting diodes (LED), fluorescent lamps, lasers or bright lights. The length of exposure usually depends on the specific condition an individual has.
One great thing about light therapy is its non-invasiveness, which is usually not the case for all drugs. It is extremely beneficial for patients who have fear of needles, or don’t like the idea of surgery, as there’s nothing more pain-free than having to stand under a LED light for a couple of minutes.
Light can be effective in specific wavelengths, with different organisms responding to different frequencies. Ultraviolet light is proven to work against several kinds of pathogens. In addition, lasers are also capable of affecting molecular structure. Studies have shown that alternating light and dark periods result in plant growth, leading to fruiting and flowering.
Light is also shown to affect Circadian rhythms in humans. In fact, giving patients a set amount of light everyday can help them sleep better and stay awake when they have to—a better option, compared to tranquilizers. It also spells advantages for those who regularly suffer from jet lag.
It seems that drugs can take a backseat to light therapy, which is turning out to be a cost-effective alternative to having to drop by the pharmacy. Light therapy also plays a role in treating psychiatric disorders, such as seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Seasonal affective disorder causes depression in individuals, and is usually caused by a lack of light. The natural treatment for this would be light exposure.
Because of its effectivity, light therapy is also used to treat a variety of skin diseases, such as eczema. The advantage of using light therapy is that it generally yields better results than drug-based treatments. If you need immediate relief from conditions like psoriasis, or depression, and even jet lag—simply standing under the right light for a certain amount of time can be of immense help.

What’s HOT! BLING is in! Crystal Accents Accessorize Your Lighting
While other classic lighting fads are steadily fading into the background, trends are pulling crystal accents back as a renewed “in” thing. Accent lighting is typically used to highlight the strong points of a room and is considered the most dramatic type of lighting. Crystal accents are simple additions to traditional lighting fixtures. They introduce a novel touch to lighting styles, as well as understated elegance and sophistication to a room.

Types of crystal accents
There are different types of crystal lighting fixtures, so you might want to ask your lighting manufacturer regarding the specific components used to create their products. Some lighting fixtures may have accents that are made of pure crystal, while others may have crystal accents that are framed in gold or silver.
Strass Swarovski crystal accents are great for their stunning clarity, and are one of the finest kinds of crystal produced in the industry. The straight edge cuts usually make up perfect prisms, and reflect light very well off common surfaces. A variant of this is the Swarovski Spectra Crystal, which is essentially the same type of accent without the optical coating. Egyptian crystals are nearly on the same level as the Swarovski crystals in terms of clarity, largely due to the high lead content.
Another type of crystal used to accessorize lighting fixtures is wood polished crystal. Wood polished crystal is often high quality and can lean a little toward the pricey end. These accents are riddled with marble dust, and are created in a process that involves a woodwheel, hence the name.
Italian crystal accents are often not as flashy as the previously mentioned crystals. They are fire-polished, leading to a characteristic rounding of the crystals’ edges. This affects the way light bounces off its surfaces, and is good for individuals who love the appearance of crystal accent lighting but don’t like too much glare.
Other types of interesting crystal accents include the Mourano crystals, which are more suitable for colouring than other crystals, and rock crystals, which are naturally cut out of the ground and not significantly altered.
Crystal accents in fixturesChandeliers are good fixtures to accessorize with crystal accents. Because these are used as main sources of whole-room lighting, crystal accents often give off striking effects. Even in the daylight, the focus is directed straight to chandelier as light bounces off the crystal, creating interesting prism effects on opaque surfaces in the room. Crystal accent lighting is also effective as downward lighting fixtures. Pendant lights are good sources of downward light, and are used to create mood lighting that doesn’t reflect huge amounts of glare. Because crystal lighting has the potential to cause glare, a dimmer switch should help control the amount of light it gives off. It’s important to remember that the kind of crystal accent lighting you use often depends a lot on the type of crystal used to create the fixture.

Family Room Lighting Tips
Plenty of activities usually take place in a family room, and finding the right type of lighting to go with the different needs of each family member can be challenging. On the plus side, knowing just which type of lighting fixture to use for which activity helps, as well as being able to blend these types of lighting components together for a pleasant overall effect.

Centre lighting
Ideally, the family room should have four main lighting points. The first of these is the centre ceiling light. This is usually the main source of lighting in the room, and is capable of illuminating the entire space. One of the common preferences for ceiling centre lights is the chandelier, as this provides a dramatic effect to the room, even in the day when the lights are turned off. Ceiling fans that function dually as light fixtures can also serve as centre ceiling lights, and can give you a run for your money by adding in a good source of ventilation as well. However, centre lights aren’t usually good for mood lighting, and are used for family activities that need plenty of light. This is great for family rooms with big game centres, such as a table hockey set, for which direct, overhead lighting is appropriate.
Sofa lighting
Table lamps serve as a kind of middle-level lighting source. They help provide mood lighting, especially table lamps whose shades are made to play on lighting effects via unique colours or designs. Family rooms are good places to socialize and bring visitors in, and table lamps provide a direct source of lighting for one space in the room. Take care that table lamps don’t give off too much glare, as they are typically positioned close to people’s faces, and might cause eye strain.
Downward lighting
CFor TV viewing purposes (as most family rooms are used for), you would do well to install a couple of floor lights. Floor lights provide downward lighting, and are great for when you want to settle down and watch a romantic comedy for family popcorn night. These help illuminate the lower level of the room without introducing glare that interferes with the images on your TV. In fact, right behind the TV is a good place to position your floor light. This is also good for video games; the constant shift in lighting and color, as well as fast-paced action of a video game can strain the eyes, so it’s important to have low lighting in the background, as opposed to direct lighting from the chandelier. Downward floor lights aren’t restricted to just TV use, either. For dad who likes to read in the family room, or mom who does her knitting at night, downward floor lamps are excellent sources of light. They also work well for any houseplants in the room that lack focal emphasis. Family rooms that have bars for food and drink also benefit from downward lighting, especially because direct lighting is needed for safe food prep. A row of pendant lights over the countertop should do the trick.
Upward lighting
Many family rooms usually have that one corner that is darker than the rest. This is where you position an upward-lighting floor lamp. This balances out the other downward lighting floor lamps in the room. The upward facing floor lamps should ideally be no more than 150 watts, and don’t need to be particularly bright, as their purpose is largely aesthetic. Halogen lights are perfect for this type of lighting.
Upward lighting is ideal for any paintings or pictures you might have hanging in the family room. Flush mounts and sconces that point upward are great choices for illumination, and help draw away any attention from the floor, which may be cluttered with children’s shoes, toys, and other things you expect to find on a family room floor. Quick Room Makeover! 6 Shades that Sizzle!A makeover is often an exciting endeavour that unleashes all the creativity you didn’t know was stored up inside of you. Whether you’re planning on redoing your bedroom, the living room, or maybe even your bathroom, one of your key considerations is the colours you use to highlight the good points. Even a slight change in the hues of your walls can spell a significant change, and suddenly you’re not as tired looking at the same old room anymore. [read more...]

While the full-scale makeover might have you painting over the walls, simply replacing little bits of furniture here and there can make a difference. Adjusting lighting fixtures such as lampshades and coloured lighting can also help create a new look for your room. These are some classy colour shades that can help you achieve the chic transformation you need. Earth
The great thing about beiges and browns is that they never really slide far down the trending list. Earth tones generally include any shade that occurs spontaneously in nature. In the world of interior design, however, earth tones are usually washed down shades of brown, beige, orange and yellow. Mixing browns and greens also provide a very natural look.
Greens
Green shades are often paired with earth tones, and these go very well together for a restful effect, and typically create a “balance” inspired by nature.
Blues
Constantly on nearly everyone’s “favourite color” list, blues are the ultimate shade for relaxation. Scientific studies have proven that shades of blue help send calming signals to the brain, and are particularly good for redoing a bedroom.
Reds
Red is a well-known color for passion and excitement. The dining and living room are good places to introduce a couple of reds in, especially because majority of socialization takes place in these areas and the shade is known to stimulate social activity, as well as appetite. A red makeover introduces class and sophistication to an ordinary room. However, be careful not to overdo the reds, and use neutral colors to tone down any “angry” effects it might have on the room.
Neutrals
Neutral shades don’t always come in simply white or off-white. Darker shades of brown and even gray can help you achieve a clean, minimalist look. If you want your room to look a little cleaner and a step closer to the modern side, neutral shades are effective.
White or off-white
If you’re making over a small room, white is a good colour to go with your redo. This is largely due to the illusion of space and light that it creates. This works well for tiny spaces (such as the bathroom), but if you’re looking to create a stunning living room or dining room, white can look dull if you don’t offset this with another color, such as cream or light neutrals. Light Charms - Beautify your lamps and chandeliers
If you have an outdated lamp sitting in your attic, there's a lot more you can do with it than simply put it up at a garage sale.
Lamps and chandeliers in themselves are already strong focal sources of beauty. If you know how to make use of lighting fixtures to your advantage, your home should look absolutely amazing, most especially when the lights are turned on. However, even the lighting fixtures themselves need to be fixed up once in a while. As time passes, the lamp designs in your home slowly fall out of style, or lose the extra sparkle they used to have when you first got them. Crystal accents slowly fall off, and vibrant lampshade colors eventually fade. Of course, replacing all the lighting fixtures in your home can be extremely expensive, not to mention highly impractical.

LED Lighting Solutions – High Tech and Eco-FriendlyDon’t know what LED lights are for? You should. Aside from providing extremely effective lighting, LED lights are great for when you’re trying to cut down on electric bills. Combining both high-tech efficiency and energy-saving features, LED lighting is the way to go these days. [read more...]

While incandescent lights have brightened our homes for years, LED lights are beginning to replace them as more environmentally feasible lighting alternatives. In addition to home lighting, LED lights are also making their way into vehicle use, and night vision. They play an important role in artistic use, as LED lights can come in all colours without compromising light quality. Cost-efficiency
Granted, these babies are expensive. It might be tempting to pass on LED lights for your regular CFLS, but all things considered, LED lighting can be cost-effective choices in the long run, as one of their key features is the long life.
The ideal LED circuit boasts 80% efficiency. This means that 80% of the electrical energy flowing through the circuit is converted to light, and the remaining 20% is lost as heat. The converse is true for incandescent lighting; 20% of energy is used as light, and 80% is converted to heat, which also explains why small rooms illuminated by incandescent lights get stuffy after a while. Spending on regular lights is eventually going to drain your budget with constant replacement expenses.
Cut back on the usual light replacement costs in your living room, as well as other important places of your home such as the garage or on the porch. If you don’t want to change lights often, such as in places that are difficult or inconvenient to reach, LED lights are a good option. Cool lights
In addition, theatres are making the switch to LED lights, as they don’t emit as much heat as regular incandescent bulbs. This is part of the reason LED lighting is more eco-friendly; heat is an energy waste product, and because LED lights don’t give off too much heat means they have better energy efficiency systems. For those living in small spaces, such as dormitories or apartments with little ventilation, LED’s cool lighting doesn’t add to the heat. Also, you have less to worry about starting a fire if you put your lamp too close to a stack of papers. Creative lighting
The main disadvantage of using incandescent lights for the holidays is that colored filters actually mess with the light output. Wrap an incandescent bulb in green plastic and the brightness suddenly goes down a few notches. LED lights, on the other hand, can be manufactured in different colors and still be as bright as regular white light. Check out our LED lighting that suits for your home and needs

Benefits of standing up at work
Feeling a little burned out at work? The solution may be simple: you’ve been spending too much time warming your seat.
Many individuals will find it surprising that excessive sitting down in front of your desk can put you at risk for several different diseases. While it might seem like the natural option to sit in a chair for a regular eight hours straight, you may be bargaining more for just a comfortable seat.

Enhanced circulation
Standing up and moving around every hour could do wonders for your circulation. Inactivity for long periods of time can increase your risk for deep vein thrombosis, which could ultimately be fatal. Keep your blood running by standing up more. Studies show that cardiovascular systems better function when you’re not in constant sedentary mode.
Decreased risk for disease
It really doesn’t matter how much exercise you get on a regular basis; if you spend a good amount of time on a chair, it won’t bode well for your health. Individuals who are constantly on their chairs have higher chances of developing conditions such as diabetes, metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease. This is mostly because of the link to inactivity,
Improved posture
Chronic back pain can plague those stuck in their seats for hours on end. Understandably, this can be highly uncomfortable, but there are greater implications. Sitting relaxes the large muscles of the buttocks, as well as facilitates weakness of hip muscles. Performing exercises such as lifting weights, running and even walking can become potential accidents just waiting to happen.
Improved metabolism
Experts say that simply standing for an hour can help you burn up to 280 calories. When calculated on a larger scale, you can actually lose up to 20 pounds a year from standing and moving about after periodic sitting. On top of that, many individuals report that they have an improved sense of well-being and feeling healthy after walking around for a few minutes in the middle of a busy work day.
Added creativity
Probably one of the major contributors to work burnout is the loss of creativity. On the plus side, because standing up can improve circulation to the brain, it can shoot up your creativity, increasing your productivity levels.
What can you do?
Trying to convince your boss to install a stand-up desk in your cubicle might cause some major snags. However, you don’t really have to butt heads with the bigwigs to get some work done healthily. Simply take a break every hour or two; in fact, you can even remind yourself by placing little reminders on your phone or computer to get off your butt and stretch every once in a while.
Because no one sees sitting down as an immediate problem to one’s health, it might seem ludicrous to imagine that you can get an injury from spending too much time in your chair. However, the numbers suggest you’ll definitely be better off with a stand-up desk at your office. Convert your desk to a stand up desk in seconds

There are usually two common reasons that prompt people to go for a remodelling job: one, they don’t like the way things look, and two, the layout of the place is no longer efficient. You might be surprised how much a simple change of lighting or bright bursts of color can usually fix whatever is wrong with the look of a room.
This year, kitchens and bathrooms are two common living spaces that are getting a lot of remodels. Trends show that under-cabinet lighting is becoming popular, as most kitchens contain several overhead cabinets that might cause some problems with lighting. Appliances are slowly disappearing from plain view, as individuals choose a tidier, more minimalist view of the kitchen area. Maple seems to be the color for kitchen remodels this year, with appliances retaining the popular sleek, stainless black.
Bathroom remodels, on the other hand, are introducing “his and her vanities”—the answer to the age-old inconvenience of guys having to sort through endless rows of skin creams and lotions, and girls digging through men’s shaving cream and colognes. Double vanities with dark wood panelling are particularly attractive this year, as well as granite and marble sink tops. Ceiling height mirrors are also emerging this year as a way to give the illusion of spaciousness in cozy bathrooms.
Energy-efficiency seems to be one of the important themes this year, as solar thermal systems make a comeback in solar powered heat tubs, as well as the rise in energy-saving lighting fixtures. At the same time, appliances go extremely high-tech as wireless technology takes over the home. Appliances may now be built to be accessible from your smartphone, and home layouts are now being altered to maximize Wi-Fi access.
Colored therapy LED lighting is an exciting new trend that many are looking forward to this year. Designers are coming up with new ways to affect mood by changing light colors. For instance, blue is used to produce a soothing effect, and red has a more vibrant, energetic feel.
Other remodelling trends for 2012 include the return of bare flooring as opposed to elaborate carpeting patterns. Tiled and hardwood floors are particularly popular at present, with many designers opting to go with more environmentally-friendly flooring covers, such as cork. Warm, earthy colors remain top of the list on trending color themes, as opposed to bright and flashy hues.

2012 Lighting Trends: What’s New in the Dallas Market
The lighting industry is seeing some pretty big changes in present trends.
Riding the big waves, the Dallas lighting market has seen its strongest release of new products in the last three years. This is due to the natural progression of creativity in lighting trends, and a “pent-up” demand from American consumers who are looking for something new and innovative, inviting manufacturers to take risks on new designs and technology.

Products of these trends are aimed at commercial and residential customers. Light fixtures now offer compact designs as well as added features, made more attractive by lower prices. Circles and ovals are presently dominating the lighting scene as strong design elements, while Oil Rub Bronze retains its spot as a dominant metal color. However, companies are testing the waters with lighter finishes on their pieces, but so far these haven’t spiked any solid trends. On the other hand, copper finishes are on the rise. One “back-to-the-future” trend is Old Fashioned Bulbs, which show up in many newly designed items this year. Also many companies are introducing Retro Pendants, featuring a restoration style for today’s modern home. In addition, chandeliers are taking on a more sparkly feel—with crystal emerging as a trending accent—and are popping up in several lighting lines. Many companies are also shifting to laser cut metal in most of their designs. In other news, LampsUSA has currently updated its inventory with up-to-date lighting pieces you are sure to love. New Quoizel Special Designs in Tiffany Lamps are now in stock and will soon be available on our site. Also check out Dolan shades with new colors and custom fabrics that are exclusively theirs. Dolan is also dishing out new medium lamp base and shade programs. Furthermore, we are adding Laura Ashley shades to the site next month, with fresh prints and patterns you’ll only find in this brand. Sheer Fabrics like organza are making a big splash this year. There’s more. We are currently reviewing our new lamp and lighting lines, so be sure to watch out for exciting new editions to our brands lists in the next few months. Some companies are featuring goods Made in America, aiming to help increase our products presentation close to home.
