Chicago Lighthouse Industries is a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility which employs over 30 people who are blind, in a manufacturing facility and in other areas. They have one sighted direct labor employee in the plant, all other individuals who work in the assembly, packaging, printing and customer service departments are either legally or totally blind, some with additional disabilities. The use of appropriate adaptive technology where necessary allows their employees to perform as efficiently and effectively as people without physical disabilities.
They began operations in 1906 as an industrial training and employment program of The Chicago Lighthouse for People Who are Blind or Visually Impaired. They began producing wall clocks in 1977 when they secured their first contract with the federal government. They have built over 4 million clocks thus far in Chicago and are aggressively developing new models to meet customer's needs.
We hope you will be happy with your newly purchased atomic wall clock from Chicago Lighthouse Industries, and we thank you for supporting them with your purchase.
Chicago Lighthouse History Since its founding in 1906 by a group of blind and sighted women, The Chicago Lighthouse for People Who are Blind or Visually Impaired has assumed a leadership role, both locally and nationally, in providing services for children and adults who are blind or visually impaired. The history of The Chicago Lighthouse is one which reflects a positive shift in philosophy from taking care of "blind people" for life, to assisting "people who are blind" in taking charge of their own lives.
Initially, the Lighthous's services were welfare oriented, providing for basic physical needs such as food and clothing. As early as 1910, however, the focus became more work oriented with the securing of subcontracts for a weaving shop, which produced baskets, and then contracts with Garrett Buggy, Edison Electric, Chicago Nut Company, Kaper Furniture and others. Traditional tasks were replaced by a broad variety of subcontracts from private industry, which helped introduce individuals who were blind to competitive job opportunities.
These subcontracting opportunities gave birth to what is now Chicago Lighthouse Industries, a modern manufacturing facility employing people who are blind or visually impaired to produce quality products to the commercial and federal markets ... Chicago Lighthouse Industries has evolved over the years from a "workshop" environment to a professional organization with over 80 years experience in quality manufacturing.
Chicago Lighthouse Industries' mission is to provide adjustment to blindness, training, job placement opportunities and continuous employment for visually impaired individuals, including those with additional disabilities, that will lead to achieving their maximum potential through the development, production and marketing of products and services that meet the highest quality standards using modern production methods and technology.
